Chinese Double Sub Patrols; Threat Increase?

It’s not often that the military tells us how many subs are chasing our aircraft carriers but Naval intelligence has released data showing that China’s fleet of more than 50 attack submarines conducted 12 patrols in 2008, twice as many as in 2007, and the highest rate recorded.

The data was obtained by the Federation of American Scientists, FAS writer Hans M. Kristensen says there were seven patrols in 2007, two in 2006, and none in 2005. In four years since 1981, China has not sent out any patrols. Its strategic ballistic missile submarines have never conducted a deterrent patrol, according to Kristensen. He also writes that the increased Chinese rate pales in comparison to that of the US Navy. “In comparison with other major navies, twelve patrols are not much. The patrol rate of the U.S. attack submarine fleet, which is focused on long-range patrols and probably operates regularly near the Chinese coast, is much higher with each submarine conducting at least one extended patrol per year. But the Chinese patrol rate is higher than that of the Russian navy, which in 2008 conducted only seven attack submarine patrols, the same as in 2007,” Kristensen writes.

Still, the information would seem on the face of it to provide pretty good ammunition for those who believe we face a rising Chinese threat.

But an expert at the Naval War College, Nikolas Gvosdev, believes the increase in Chinese sub patrols may not be indicative of a threat.

“I think that this is a good example of framing–once you set the headline a certain way, you create a certain buzz. We are also seeing this with regard to Russia’s naval deployments, which are ‘the largest since the fall of the Soviet Union.’ Sounds threatening, but then you count 13 total ships including supply vessels, and it isn’t so threatening,” the professor said in an email. Gvosdev is probably better known as the author behind the Washington Realist blog.

He goes on to say that, “Unless we want to argue that the very existence of a Chinese submarine force is an existential threat to the United States, it should be expected that the PLAN wants to gain greater experience and conduct more missions, and this by itself shouldn’t be a major concern to us–especially if they aren’t engaged in missions off of the U.S. coast or designed to test their ability to block our SLOCs.”

What we’d really like to see, of course, are the official Chinese figures on the number of sub patrols that occurred. Hello? Anyone listening at the Wisconsin Avenue Chinese military complex?

At least they were made in china, so dont sweat china, I’m sure we have all of the recordings we need. The more they go to sea, the more info we get from them.

Are those attack boats diesel or nuclear? Makes a difference.

Grey Eagle, R. Smith;
First, just about everything in our stores is “Made In China” nowadays, They have a space program, and nukes with missiles that can carry them pretty darn far too, so “Don’t Worry” isn’t an option any longer.
Next, if they can launch nukes, does it really matter if the boat is nuclear or diesel?

Main point is that China has –NEVER– been Anybody elses’ friend. China has had full and advanced civilizations before the middle east crawled out from under a rock (Well, they still are trying to get out from under that rock for the most part, but where did Western Civilization come from if not from the lucky few who did escape?)

Anybody who Poo-Paa’s China is an idiot. They have ALWAYS been a threat, and they ALWAYS will be a threat to anybody other than themselves, and sometimes even then too.

Even though we have what appears to be a good monologue with them now, it’s still a tentative string holding onto two huge powers. China’s pissed at us for helping Taiwan, and we ain’t backing down. Its the Giant and the Tiger facing off and circling each other, looking for a weak point, and the weak point is becoming visible on the Giant, US. The middle east thing is breaking our backs and our banks. China KNOWS this and is poising its self to take full advantage of the future situation if it presents its self.

Never underestimate China! They’re in it for them selves, and screw the rest of the world!

is it true that one of their sub suddenly appered in the midlle of one of our carrier task force? because if its true we might want to know, how and why we did not see it first.beware that w might be to cocky to think that they are not a threat.

China has the largest Air Force in the world, satellites capable of shattering our communications and billions of bullet catchers. We should have given them the boot in Korea and Russia in WWII. Well hind sight is 20/20. Lets see if we can do better now. Any one who underestimates their enemy will lose in the end. As stated above I have not found anything American made lately. China is doing every thing they can to immobile us. From children’s toys painted with lead paint, pet food and anything else they can get away with. How ever just like WWII we will have americans selling us out for the almighty dollar.

Why should we be concerned, we have a declining Navy, a weak defense construction capability, a declining economy, a government that has Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time-Players in the WH.
If we want to have a War with China someday we had better pre-order ammo, uniforms, electronics from them beforehand!

AbSalon– So let’s get our energy house in order and let the Chinese screw with the MidEast (they’re basically letting us do the dirty work there), might deflate their ego a bit. Might even get rid of the commies entirely, e.g. the Soviets in Astan.

Russ– Not sure you’re reading the situation with the Chinese correctly. If the lead paint etc. was a plot against us, why did they poison their OWN baby formula? Absolutely, do not underestimate an enemy, but don’t overestimate either.

I amy only be 15 years old, I may be the only god damned Kid able to be a Marine in this god forsaken country but you guy’s are missing the big picture here. The former gad damned communist Russia is probably behind all of this. All Putin wants is to take us out of being a world power. He is trying to make alliances with countries that hate the U.S. and get things that his country needs. Like Venasuela for instance. He is selling Russian military weapons to them in return for oil. The Venasuelans only pay 10 cents a barrel for oil and 5 cents for gas. Plus they hate us because we are to involved. Not saying that’s a bad thing but come on now. China is in direct link with Russia so they are most likely to be taking orders from Putin. He has his hand on a small little button that will bring his little servant Jintao to his side. All I am saying is you have to be aware of Russia.

Agree with Russ. China is not our friend. We will eventually pay for our ignorance of their goal…to destroy us.

I must agree with Russ. If we let our self to be self consumed and arrogant. we will only destroy ourselfs.

If it weren’t for Clinton selling out to China, and letting them cart off secret info, they wouldn’t be able to shoot down satellites.
Now Hillary’s our Sec. of state?
Scary!

China is the BORG—assimilate. there new drug is capitalism, but that doesn’t matter, tariffs give them time to be stronger–patiences.‘they don’t care how many people they loose in a fight. because of that we will always be at a disadvantage. Since we know that, we need to fight outside OUR box.!?
