SEAL Sniper Details Trickle In

SEAL Sniper Details Trickle In

For those Buzz readers hungry for detail about the Somali pirates, my buddy Christian over at DefenseTech offers some details about the techniques behind the SEAL sniper shots. Read on for some info about the firearms used and who probably played in this most satisfying incident at sea.

Christian piece follows:

The Combat Operator’s Jake Allen — not a former SEAL, but a Marine infantry officer and private military contractor and security consultant with sourcing in the Teams — had no detailed information on the actual shot, but described the overall techniques used by the SEAL team.

First of all, multiple sources indicate this was conducted by SEAL Team VI, aka Naval Special Warfare Development Group, aka “DevGru.” This is the naval equivalent of Delta Force.
Allen says the team likely were on the intel of the incident very soon after news hit the wires about the capture and were already well in advance of developing a plan to rescue Phillips before they deployed to the USS Bainbridge.

It’s unclear why the team decided to parachute onto the scene under cover of darkness from a C-17 with rafts. One possibility is that this was a far more covert entry than simply landing on the destroyer via helicopter, or Allen says it could have been due to range restrictions…did the DevGru guys travel straight from Little Creek, Va.? Probably.

There was no rest and relaxation or getting rid of the jetlag for the team. Allen estimates they were planning and rehearsing shortly after arriving aboard the Bainbridge. Delay was, however, in their favor, Allen said, since food was running out, sleep was short and the weather was worsening for the ill-trained pirates who probably were beginning to realize they bit off more than they could chew.

Whether it was luck or planning, clearly the idea to tow the life boat behind the Bainbridge and reel it into closer range made a sniper takedown much more of a reasonable possibility than any other tactic, sources say. A shot of 80–90 feet — even at night and in rolling seas — is a cakewalk for DevGru SEALs.

“These guys can put three rounds onto the head of a quarter at that range,” Allen told me.

And let’s not get carried away with the sea state, says DT contributor Joe Buff. A multi-thousand ton destroyer is a pretty stable platform in any but the most tumultuous sea states and makes dialing in a shot on an admittedly tossing life raft more doable — a smart platform for the Team to operate from.

We also have some information — unconfirmed, though we’re working on it — about how the shots were taken and what was used. Our firearms expert Eric Poole who writes for Tactical-Life posits that the snipers were using the MK-11 .308 sniper system manufactured by Knights Armament Co. This weapon is awesome, by the way (I’ve shot it a few times myself) and, if this is indeed what the shooters used, would mark a major, high-profile departure from legacy thinking about sniping which holds bolt-action rifles as the Gold Standard or marksmanship.

Poole figures the DevGru frogmen removed the “overpowered” standard-issue Leupold scopes and opted for the Aimpoint CCO augmented by the PVS-14 night vision monocular. Though the SEAL version of the MK-11 Mod 0 is issued with suppressors, it’s unclear whether the operators used them, but I’d bet a million bucks they did.

One other question (among many) remains open…were there three shots or four? Poole reasons, and Allen and I agree, that someone had to shoot through the lifeboat window first, then fire the kill shots. My limited knowledge of ballistics leads me to believe the snipers could not rely on the effectiveness of the one window shot to actually strike the target where it was aimed based in the potential deflection of hitting that probably plastic (glass) window.

Poole, Allen and Buff agree that this operation was meticulously planned and flawlessly executed. The DevGru SEALs developed the situation (with their interagency partners in the FBI and other OGAs), planned an attack and executed when the opportunity presented itself (and I don’t buy this “the captain was in danger” line the Pentagon and White House is trying to sell here…you mean to tell me Phillips hadn’t had a gun pointed at his back anytime before this?)…It was a kick butt operation carried out by one of the best counterterrorist units in the world and they deserve a huge HooYah from all of us…

Dudes,they were being towed by our own ship!
Therefore that excludes sneaking up on them…
Therefore it was an RANGE war…Exclusionism.
All because of a small boat and radios…

Admittedly this is fascinating copy, however I think the DOD should have kept it methods under heavy raps. These pirates were not thinking of sniper fire. But now that the story is out all future operations won’t have it so easy. Perhaps it is not possible to keep methods quiet but it still makes sense to me.

most people are not thinking of sniper fire.… hence why they are effective..

Almost scary how much detail he has on the “overall techniques” of this operation. Again, another very good article, and this analysis (although I believe to be a little too detailed to leave the high side) is damn good and offers some insight to how this type of operation works.

We as a country like to brag about this kind of stuff all too often and in turn it makes missions like this all the more difficult for the future.

I think those who make the arguement the less known the better about the more specific aspects of the event make a good point.
But I think you could also argue revealing, at least to some extent, the abilities of these remarkable professionals may also serve to some extent as a deterrent in the future. Mess with the Bull, you get the horns.

Great article. Regarding four shots (one firing through the window) — according to “Inside Delta Force” by Eric Haney, Delta Force determined through experimentation that a .308 shot through the cockpit glass of a commercial airliner is sufficient to both shatter the glass and hit the target properly. That is — you can just shoot through the glass and hit your target, because the glass won’t deflect the bullet much.

I’m glad all these fighters are on our side.

regarding whether to release details, while recognition is appreciated, these men would humbly prefer to keep their succeses in the darkness. unfortunately, several political factors forced the military to publicize a few too many details. God bless America!

Had the political leadership actually had the backbone to take such actions in the past, we would never have had such an incident, unfortunately the west has become conditioned to not offending anyone.

More of the same will need to follow, these types of incidents will increase, that is the only sure thing we do know. A job well executed by people who have been allowed to get on and sort things out, again more of the same required.

DT contributor Joe Buff has apparently not been aboard a destroyer. Those rascals roll quite a bit in calm seas, so you can imagine the rolling and pitching in rough seas.

Great job guys. You gave us some good news which was a welcomed relief from all the gloom and doom of the economy (as reported by America’s media).

What difference does it make if we discuss the type aircraft, the caliber and brand of their weapons, or whether they jumped with or without inflatable boats?

Anyone serious enough to contend with a SEAL mission already knows their capability. They either avoid them at all possible cost or assume the worst.

You can’t be serious to think anything we know is really going to detract from the success of their mission do you?

Everyone knows they can insert themselves quietly and bring all the weapons and electronics required to complete a successful mission. Give credit to their training and tactics. They simply get the job done.

The secret isn’t who manufactured their equipment. The secret is are they already watching you or not.

It is good to see the return on investment America has from these teams. Additionally, it is also nice to know they are on our side too.

We need about 4 — 5 more missions like this to drive the point home to these hijackers that when the see the stars and stripes, they best go the other way and in a hurry. Our position MUST be that with hijsckers, we take no prisoners…ever unless they just give up when they realize who or what ship they just tried to hijack.

Our Seals are awesome. I remember when I was in the Navy, they snuck on our ship by climbing the anchor chain, then woke up the Captain to tell him they just blew up the ship. Our liberty was secured for a few days :-( . They tried to “deliver” something to our radio room a few years after, but as the messenger of the watch, I stayed with the guy all the way to the room, where they knew it was not right. If I left for a second, well, we know. Those pirates are STUPID. Funny how they let the Ship tow them out to sea. I saw a diplay in Gitmo and I believe it is how we should deal with the pirates. Let an F-16/18 fly over and light of enough napalm to take out the beaches they come from.God bless you guys and THANK YOU from America.

There is a reason why these guys(special ops) don’t tell where they are from, for reasons like this. Instead of trying to figure out who the shooters are, try celebrating that fact that they did their job and did it well and move on. The bottom line is, you will never know how they did what they did cause you were not there, you can only speculate. The captain is safe and thats all that matters to me.

My respect goes out to these men we onlly need to know a“s “SEALs“they did a damm good job!Lets hope the pirates know we dont fool around!!God Bless Our Special Troops!allong with USA..

“I think the DOD should have kept it methods under heavy raps.”

Heavy raps? Like what, Jay-Z? Or old-school “heavy” like Onyx?

God Bless and thanks to the rescuers. Unfortunately, like the lice that they are, the liberals in government waited to see if it was a success and then jumped in to claim credit away from true American Heros! We cannot survive as a Nation with out “rough men willing to go in harms way!” Forever Bless these brave warriors and prevent their good name and deeds being used by filthy scurrilous bureaucrat cowards! Semper Fi!

Good morning:

Never mind how they did it-I’m wondering what happened to the Somalis’ sorry carcasses,

Is the U.S. taxpayer gonna get stuck with an elaborate funeral for each one of these a-holes?

I’ve worked tankers in that region and you can almost walk on sharks. Over the side.

We will NEVER know about the shots fired cause it will be classified for almost ever. But a .308 will sit up and do tricks properly applied!

Amazing posts… like these pirates have a brain… they journeymen thieves, hooligans. Thing I don’t understand is why aren’t these cargo ships carrying any defense; no armed contractors; no weapons, not anything… It doesn’t take the US Navy Seals, etc. to solve the problem… when one of the pirates motor launches hits the sea, blow-it-away… keep it simple

One must be careful firing a weapon around some of these vessels. Many of them carry volatile cargo and a spark could send the whole crew across the ocean to India.

It would be better to declare a “non-approach” zone, say three miles, around ALL vessels and hose down any vessel making an approcah.

I think that the Seals did a wonderful job. The simple fact is that certain information needs to be kept secret. I use to work in the area where the seals were deployed from. Who knows, I might have met one of them on gate duty. How many people do you know with a military ID wearing a a goatee. That is the simple reason why this should be kept secret. If I know this, who else knows? They did their jobs just as the pilot does theirs. It is not about being popular or being noticed; they just enjoy what they do. Let them enjoy what they do and leave it at that. The Captain is safe and that was the purpose.

This dope is neat to know, but I do have an opsec issue with tactics being spread by diarretic repetiton by news agencies, the fifth column inch of fifth columnists, to all enemies, ensuring that the cannon fodder did not die in vain, they just gave their brother mohammedan extremists another glance at the tactics they could face…

west_rhino: When the tactic is “be the baddest mother******s on the block”, I don’t think that opsec is really a concern anymore…

I love to know details, but I think it’s best that as little info as possible get’s out. The British are crazy about keeping info about their special forces secret.

Some “leftie” journalist is just slobbering to uncover the names of the shooters so that revenge can be brought on the families of the “murderers” for killing these innocent young Somali gentlemen. Why can’t our government just solve problems without trying for the front page credit. A job well done “Bravo Zulu” is what the SEALs deserve without all the hoopla. When will we learn?

Who said Destroyers are stable at sea? I remember looking down at those guys from my carrier’s flight deck and watching them getting tossed around like rags and thinking to myself, “Thank GOD I’m on a carrier.”

Yes, another GREAT job well done. All people serving in the military deserve our THANKS. The people in “spec-ops” are truely our HEROS…We can never thank them enough for their service.
I agree with the thougts of those that say we should not let the enemy know everything we know!

Yes us Brits are crazy about keeping our op’s and specil forces under raps that way we have the upper hand with the element of surprise on our side,Well done on a good job, from the UK

way to go.

Really? I think it’s some right wing hack from FAUX PAS.

Destroyers stable?? I used to get seasick just watching them from my Carrier’s deck and from what I’ve been told by “tin-can” sailors they have a lot of injuries from just banging into things like bulkheads and overheads.

The simple fact is that certain information needs to be kept secret.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think you are overly simplifying these things and making some silly generalizations.
The information available is hardly the kinds of things that need to be kept secret. If we read about them in newspapers than it’s a safe bet their real enemy already knows this. Think about it, we are the last to know. In other words none of this stuff discussed was a secret to begin with so lets stop pretending that it is.
Yes, they did a great job, yes they move around without anyone realizing, yes we don’t hear about much of what they do, yes they get the latest toys. Everyone knows this.
The reason why the information was leaked/released about the pirates is it was a political high visibilty event. With the crew watching and the world waiting it was hardly a normal black ops mission for a SEAL team.
We don’t know that someone might be publicizing the event for a reason. All we know is what we already knew about SEAL’s. Wow, they have intel meetings and plan their events and show up unannounced? Old news folks.
I’m not too concerned about the information divulged here. It’s fairly generic and there’s been enough coverage from the mainstream media about the tactics used, this approach would never be a surprise again. Besides, I think it’s unlikely the Somali pirates are going to read this and change their tactics accordingly.
BTW, highly recommend Chuck Pfarrer’s “Warrior Soul” for a description of his days as a SEAL (including on Team Six) back in the 1980s. If BUDS sounds like a challenge, Six sounds far worse.
I agree with the above post, blow these guys out of the water. You see a boatload of AK47-toting guys headed toward you, you know they’re not out water skiing. No quarter.
Hell, there’s been so many spec ops movies that tactics and methods of planning and executing ops are widely known, except in Samolia. Thank goodness. Repeat of same scenario is possible until “business” model is replaced by “terrorist” model…which is coming..Business will become mercenary on Somalian side..State money will substitute for ransome and more deadly engagements unless convoys are implemented along that coast.
um they published the information as a deterrent, there in no danger of running out of options when dealing with these situations, a 50 cal could easily tear through the boat and we’ve had thermal imaging for quite sometime, easy enough to find out who to shoot at, the ones with guns.
personally I think they should disappear them into the bottom of the ocean and let there buddies live a real life horror movie of whose next
Giving money to these pirates to free ships and crews, means they will be able to buy fuel and better weapons from the black market. it would be better to lock down the flow of weapons they have access to and let nothing except food into somolia. Mind you that should have been done years ago.
A armer piecing 300win or 338 would do the job through a window no prob, need the ft lb behind the round, The other problem with these pirates is they have no formal training so youre dealing with a un-stable target, whos sweating, shiting his pants and likely to kill the hostage by mistake. Anyone with half a brain knows how to do opps like these, so it no secret, the difference is having had the training, the gear and the balls to do it.
The stupidest article on SOF I’ve ever read. All three contributors are quacks that based their “expert” opinions on books and fireaems magazines. I seriously doubt anyone involved in writing the article has any substantive white or black SOF background.
I am just glad President Obama led the way and enabled this to happen. Thanks to our dear leader, the SEALS did a great job.
How the hell else were they to get there? Slow boat to China? The long pole in the tent was the decision to deploy the team + the ROE once they were on site. DaJaVu Jimmy Carter and Operation Eagle Claw!
YGTBSM!!!! why did he take 4 days to make a decision and why did he make the ROE so restrictive? His actions were and are a joke — that is his media reach around and patting themselves on there colectively backs!!
AH, now it comes out
Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday and asking why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:
1. BHO wouldn’t authorize the DEVGRU/NSWC SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours going against OSC (on scene commander) recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, BHO imposed restrictions on their ROE that they couldn’t do anything unless the hostage’s life was in “imminent” danger
3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the raggies all sighted in, but could not fire due to ROE restriction
4. When the navy RIB came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to ROE restrictions. As the raggies were shooting at the RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.
5. BHO specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams
6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL team CDR finally decide they have the OpArea and OSC authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead raggies
7. BHO immediately claims credit for his “daring and decisive” behaviour. As usual with him, it’s BS.
So per our last email thread, I’m downgrading Oohbaby’s performace to D-. Only reason it’s not an F is that the hostage survived.
Read the following accurate account.
Philips’ first leap into the warm, dark water of the Indian Ocean hadn’t worked out as well. With the
Bainbridge in range and a rescue by his country’s Navy possible, Philips threw himself off of his
lifeboat prison, enabling Navy shooters onboard the destroyer a clear shot at his captors — and none
was taken.
The guidance from National Command Authority — the president of the United States,
Barack Obama — had been clear: a peaceful solution was the only acceptable outcome to this standoff
unless the hostage’s life was in clear, extreme danger.
The next day, a small Navy boat approaching the floating raft was fired on by the Somali pirates — and
again no fire was returned and no pirates killed. This was again due to the cautious stance assumed by
Navy personnel thanks to the combination of a lack of clear guidance from Washington and a mandate
from the commander in chief’s staff not to act until Obama, a man with no background of dealing with
such issues and no track record of decisiveness, decided that any outcome other than a “peaceful
solution” would be acceptable.
After taking fire from the Somali kidnappers again Saturday night, the onscenecommander decided
he’d had enough.
Keeping his authority to act in the case of a clear and present danger to the hostage’s
life and having heard nothing from Washington since yet another request to mount a rescue operation
had been denied the day before, the Navy officer — unnamed in all media reports to date — decided
the AK47 one captor had leveled at Philips’ back was a threat to the hostage’s life and ordered the
NSWC team to take their shots.
Three rounds downrange later, all three brigands became enemy KIA and Philips was safe.
There is upside, downside, and spinside to the series of events over the last week that culminated in
yesterday’s dramatic rescue of an American hostage.
Almost immediately following word of the rescue, the Obama administration and its supporters claimed
victory against pirates in the Indian Ocean and [1] declared that the dramatic end to the standoff put
paid to questions of the inexperienced president’s toughness and decisiveness.
Despite the Obama administration’s (and its sycophants’) attempt to spin yesterday’s success as a result
of bold, decisive leadership by the inexperienced president, the reality is nothing of the sort.
What should have been a standoff lasting only hours — as long as it took the USS Bainbridge and its
team of NSWC operators to steam to the location — became an embarrassing four day and counting
standoff between a ragtag handful of criminals with rifles and a U.S. Navy warship.
Lookie like Cap’n Skip is either a leaker breaking opsec, or, just silly. The operators concerned and not only experts, they are also discrete and they are respectful to the Commander in Chief. If you want a political rant, go to Huffington Post, man.
I say next time, just blast away. Don’t even let the hostage slow things down. If they can’t hide behind hostages, they will quit taking them.
If ever there was a time for misrepresenting the truth, this is one of those times. I support the US military providing as little info as possible in order to preserve the tactics for the future. Why not just say that the pirates drowned? I can’t wait until we send over a merchant ship with a crew of 15 trained operators that just transits back and forth leaving a trail of pirates. The cruel sea got them…
This came from a Naval Academy graduate friend.
Having some experience in leading people during very dangerous operations, I find it intolerable that POTUS has such a weak capability to function.
But then we knew that when he was elected. If this is part of “Change” we are in big trouble, but then I guess we, who might be considered “rightwing (former military) extremists” already fully understood the “let’s all get along” mentality of Obama.
BBC
This was forwarded to me. I believe it is an accurate account. I watched the Pentagon News Conference right after this and the reporters kept insisting that Obama gave a personal order. “No,” the Naval officer on the scene kept saying through the phone, “We went on an over-all blanket order that gives the local commander authority to act if someone’s life is in danger!”
Next morning…first thing on TV was…Obama gives order to shoot pirates!!!
There is no way to check out the authenticity of this account. Snopes won’t have a clue since it involves classified material but I received this from a Naval Officer of the highest integrity and reputation. Some of the alphabet soup is listed below.
BHO is POTUS (President of the United States)
ROE = Rules of Engagement
RIB = It is the supply boat that delivered water and food to the pirates and CAPT Phillips.
Received from a retired admiral friend….
The latest scoop, and more likely, the truth.
Knights Arm. made a fine weapon. They are currently being used by Army snipers too in A-stan. Great job SEAL team.
SOF are not as ungrossly unprofessional as to comment on what may or may not have been happening up the food chain.
Too stupid to live, illegal to kill.
I don’t think Decatur would have enjoyed a satcom link to the White House — he’d never have gotten authority to raid Tripoli harbor from that charismatic guy in the White House. (PLUS it was an election year.)
Seems like the days of individual commanders exercising judgement are long gone, and I’m not professionally equipped to second-guess the Bainbridge CO or anyone else involved. Whether the on-scene cdr “creatively” or “slavishly” interpreted his ROE, though, he did the right thing, and should be recognized for his judgement.
BTW, I’m glad this story is getting so much coverage — screw what the pirates think, I bet it’s making them wonder if maybe onshore crime isn’t safer.
Meanwhile, why doesn’t our President use this opportunity to fix what one of his predecessors abandoned in Somalia 15 years ago? Making Somalia a real country again addresses a clear & present danger to our national interests; makes a positive statement to the Muslim world about our commitment to addressing injustice; and would “increase the peace” in the region where his dad grew up (more or less, Kenya being Somalia’s neighbor).
Why do we still bow to rogue nations and try to settle things like pansies. I am sick and tired of how we treat these inhumane creatures and then send them food from our paychecks. Where have the great leaders gone? Our foes blow up our Marines in Lebanon, blast the barracks in Saudi, blow a hole in the USS Cole, crash jets into the Trade Center, Pentagon, etc…get the picture? What do we get but more frustration, less credibility, mockery by other nations, and more of giving in to their customs and demands. What will it take for the USA to finally wake up and take command again as a world leader and gain the respect back it once had. Do foreign troops need to actually land on our beaches for us to wake up and smell the roses. I fear that will be the case. For the most part we have become a nation of talkers instead of action takers. I love our military. Those who have had the honor of serving (as I) don’t need detailed stories blabbed in detail (either true or false) for our current or future enemies to read or study. We hear very little of what is going on inside other countries. It is because they are smart. Remember, you always worry about the silent individual or country than one who blabs foolishly about what they do. There is mystery in silence. Let’s just leave our Honorable SEALS alone to do what they do best. If you want to be involved then just pray for their safety. The non-military community seems to love to be military couch commanders with all of “what they think” should be done in any crisis. Stay out of it and stay in your own arena of expertise. Otherwise go down and enlist like we have. As for our fragile, fickle, so called leader of this country, just sign the check giving our brothers/sisters in arms exactly what they need. They are the backbone of America, not the foolish companies that you have bailed out in the past due to their inability to add and subtract and to lie so well.
As part of a special team of warriors while on active duty, you did not have to put our deeds on the cover of Time magazines, shout from the rooftops, or continue to pin medals on our chests for “doing good deeds”. We volunteered for the job that we did and our rewards came from doing what we were paid to do. Otherwise we wouldn’t be doing it.
We were and are a special lot of individuals who just loved what we did. Who else would you want to do the job? C’mon America, we have a lot to do here at home working on our own messes. Let us leave our military to take care of everyone else’s messes. May America Bless God. He has already blessed us in abundance beyond measure. Let’s not lose that blessing. HOO YAH!!!
skip’s 6:09 and peacock’s 12:58 are copies of a report that have been denied by the purported sender, a retired admiral.
The president concurred w/ NSC and ordered that onscene commander had authority to act.
Lmao @ those coming up in here all blustery w/ their false knowledge like a force 5 gale.
George Peacock. Go to snopes.com & check out that letter. It’s already been proven to be bogus BS. Follow the link at the bottom for a time line. The SEAL team wasn’t even on the Bainbridge when Capt. Phillips tried to escape from the life boat. This junk was written by some right wing Obama hater like yourself. I invite every poster on here to check this out on snopes.I think the timeline said the Bainbridge was still about a mile away when Phillips jumped from the life boat. Check out snopes and then wipe the egg off of your face G.P. Or you can be like one of my rt wing Obama hating friends & still choose to believe lies over the truth. It’s up to you. Kudos to SEAL teams everywhere. HOO YAH.
Ignorance loves a false comment.…
And all you did“Stephen“was,copy it.…And why use the time frames??? You are a hacker…A video man…
II have seen these guys training and they are as bad**s as it gets. The only time you might here them brag is among themselves. These men are quiet professionals and Little creeks a beautiful place probably the safest too with these walk around. these guys train all the time and if they have extra time they train some more. I was docked many a time next their training areas. To the sniper, thank you for all the time, training, and time spent away from loved ones.
