Independent companies are venturing out of their country's territorial area and into known dangerous waters: so why are tax payers expected to protect them with government and military protection, rescue, and further costly (financial and citizen lives) political involvement to find the reason they are pirating? If they want to be pirates, let them; and let the ships defend themselves. Why shouldn't these independent, for-profit companies protect their own vessels, crew and cargo? Goodness. Why not get back to using our dollars to protect our own soil, our boundaries, our people. If you choose to travel outside your borders, do so at your own risk and own expense. These agencies and politicians are simply concerned about job securities - theirs. And as a female captain who ventured out into foreign waters and open seas in a 24 ft sailboat at the age of 22 with no one else responsible for my safety....I say these shipping companies and captains need to get real and take ownership of their own choices. If your ship, cargo and crew are worth defending, then arm yourselves and do it, and don't hide in your cabin waiting for a destroyer to handle your small jobs.

I agree and I just don’t get it. The US cannot always be fixing everyone's problems.I think the individual shipping lines need to protect their own ships ... however they see fit to do it. The military cannot just be "hanging around" in case something happens.

Other countries have GOT to get involved. The last thing we need to do is charge in like the calvary, destroy a pirate lair, and then have a host of EU lawyers file cases for human rights violations at the Hague. The UN was utterly feckless in its dealings with the genocide in Darfur and Rawanda. Perhaps they might want to tackle what is truly an international problem? I pray this administration does not allow themselves to be talked into taking a "leading role" here.We have demonstrated that we can take care of our own. There is too much cost and downside risk playing the beat cop in the world any more.

Ed Ward says “Provide armed on board protection for US flagged shipping and let every other country do the same or deal with the results”.

Spot on, Ed! Been there done that - it sounds so easy and certainly appealed to the "other" Clinton. Bottom line is money. Somali govt and more importantly Somali "elders" are only looking for money.Food aid and other badly needed basics of life will never flow to the average Somali.Somalia is all about tribes, retribution and money.Provide armed on board protection for US flagged shipping and let every other country do the same or deal with the results. We have far more important matters on our plate at home and elsewhere abroad.

The very last thing we should do is try once again to deal with Somali Warlords and/or the current government.
