As a matter of principle the US should continue to encourage the Indian government to begin serious efforts to reduce tensions along the common border with Pakistan. Fears and mistrust characterize the relationship between these two nuclear armed nations. Start with Kashmir and move toward a demilitarized zone and military cooperation. Although extremely challenging, this would help Pakistan to free up resources. If the Indian and Pakistani people do not see extremism as a common threat to be vanquished, they will continue to look at each other as enemys.

This article intimates the need for Pakistan to shift forces from the Indian border to the Afganistan border.
