Gates Mulls Two Prez Choppers

Gates Mulls Two Prez Choppers

We may have two presidential helicopter programs in our future, not just one. That’s what Defense Secretary Robert Gates told the House Appropriations defense subcommittee in a Tuesday afternoon hearing.

One helo would fly the president and aides to Camp David and other standard presidential venues. The other would be used to evacuate the president in a crisis. We think they would have to call it Rescue 1. Gates said he heard about the idea this morning and was intrigued by it.

Several subcommittee members tried to get Gates to take back the idea of killing the VH-71 program but Gates made it pretty clear he wants to have nothing more to do with the effort, which crumbled under a plethora of requirements dumped on it by White House security types. Gates called the VH-71 “a poster child for an acquisition program gone terribly wrong.”

While the new effort gets better defined, the Pentagon plans to spend about $1.2 billion to keep the current presidential fleet flying.

Gates’ press secretary, Geoff Morrell, told us before the hearing started that the White House military office, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics and the Navy would guide the new program. The requirements would come primarily from the Secret Services, as they did before, funneled through the military office. Rep. Jack Murtha, chairman of the subcommittee, told Gates he had to keep an eye on the Secret Service and make sure they didn’t let requirements get out of control again.

im guessing if you wanted to evacuate… something really fast would be on their mind… hmmm v-22 anyone?

what i dont get is you kill a billion dollar program… only to create 2 more… wtf?! the project was complete.… Now we got to spend more R&D money to come up w/something else…

Jimbo hits the nail on the head — we can’t afford one program so let’s have two? What is Gates taking and where can I get some of that?

Reading between the lines, the story is “We’ll have lots of new programs and lots of new money — as soon as you re-elect Barack Obama”. Like they said that we are gonna terminate the F-22 program and one of these days (after testing) we may buy lots of shiny F-35s. Of course when the day arrives to sign those checks, the deficit will be very high, the country’s infrastructure will be crumbling, there will be lots of half-completed projects…

Yeah buddy, change we can believe in.

heck just keep every president from now on in the White House. That should make the Secret Service happy eh.

Why have a president at all? Just shoot the bugger and all the IRD, SS, FBI and BATF guys, anarchy and 5th world hovels for all, no carbon footprint, no organization to build cars, drill oil or do anything more than just scrape a living out of the soil… the greenie vegan freaks would be happy at last, at least until the republic of Nothingistan invades and lines the tofu munchers up against the wall with everyone else.

YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT IT TAKE A BILLION DOLLARS TO FIGUR OUT THAT EVERY BRANCH HAS HELOS AND HOW HARD WITH TODAYS TO HAVE A SECURE COMMO AND SEND ANY MILITARY TRANSPORT CHOOPER TO PICK HIM UP FOR THE PUDDLE JUMP TO CAMP DAVID ESCORTED BY A COUPLE GUN SHIPS ITS NOT THAT TERRIBLY DIFFICULT

Trying to upgrade the fleet that he has now is like taking an old computer and trying to upgrade to todays standards of computers. It would be very costly and will have a hard time finding parts to fit without gutting the entire chopper. Lets just have a little common sense, gates, live with the brain fart and lets not waste valuable tax dollars that are already spent on the VH71 and finish at least increment #1. We can take a look at increment#2 later.

I know this will be off the subject but it time to say it. They throw money around like its nothing. Here is what I think. I will be 62 years old in November. I have work may entire life and had paid taxes. Its time for us seniors to have a real break. At the age of 62 years old we should not have to pay any taxes at all no matter what our income is. We have paid taxes all of our working life. Give us a damn break!

What get’s me is that a program to purchase a handfull of helicopters will cost several billion dollars? What the…????

It isn’t like there aren’t helicopters already developed that can’t do the job. Not to mention there are AMERICAN companies that have them. And why 2 different helos? One can’t do both jobs now?

Charles is right, Gates is smokin’ something.
