Iran Threat ‘Increased Substantially’

Iran Threat ‘Increased Substantially’

The director of the Missile Defense Agency, Lt. Gen. Patrick O’Reilly, said during an otherwise pretty dull hearing before the House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee that the threat to the United States has “increased substantially” with the recent launch by Iran of a small satellite and the launch last week of a mid-range ballistic missile.

That caught the ears of the professional congressional staffers at the Thursday hearing, who wondered what the implications might be, since they were not explored at the hearing.

Some possible answers came from the venerable RAND Corporation. It came out with a report about Iran and its relations with the US over the next decade. One of the key recommendations of the May 19 report, “Dangerous But Not Omnipotent: Exploring the Reach and Limitations of Iranian Power in the Middle East,” is that the US should back off — de-escalate in the report’s language — on a bilateral basis and combine that with “muscular multilateral efforts targeted at Iranian behaviors” that are not acceptable to the international community, such as terrorism and its development of nuclear weapons. Key to this multilateral approach would be support from Russia and China, which the report concedes is “questionable.”

One of the most interesting policy recommendations concerns how the US should communicate its policy goals. We must “issue unambiguous statements about US interests and intentions in the region, particularly regarding Iraq,” the authors say, The messages must be “simple and easily understood, and the United States must stick to them long enough for them to be taken seriously.” Among those statements should be a pledge that the US will say it has “no long term interest in occupying Iraq or establishing a permanent military presence” in Iraq.

The 230-page report, was commissioned by the U.S. Air Force in order to “accurately gauge the strategic challenges from Iran” over the next decade. If the threat from Iran really has “increased substantially,” as the MDA director told the subcommittee, quickly finding answers and implementing alternatives to the policies that have failed to deter Iran from developing ICBMs and pursuing nuclear weapons for much of the last decade is imperative.

The RAND guys sound like Jimmy Carter and the Obama camp touting the silly notion that if the US speaks to the Persians in soft, soothing tones then Iran will become Sweden. The Persians want to be “the” regional power in the Gulf and percieve nukes & missiles as the tools necessary to achieve that goal. No amount of “peace posturing” by American politicians is going to stop the Iranian drive to develop nuclear weapons and delivery systems.

Yet another fake report to provide cover for Obama’s touchy feely foreign policy. Let’s face it. This administration will do nothing to stop Iran from getting nukes. Israel will go to war with Iran and we will sit by and do nothing but watch.

Let’s just wait and see how the NKorea nuke game plays out.…oh wait they have nukes now don’t they. Well surely we can rely on Russia and China to reign in Iran, like they did with NKorea–oh they didn’t did they. Yea looks like Iran/Hezbullah will have nukes soon too. Fat chance our administration or the rest of the world is going to do anything about it. Hopefully those crazy Israelis will pull something out of their a$$ like they always do.

ya hopefully as Regan said “boys will be boys” and Israel will take care of iran… but those NKoreans alwasy like to stir the pot… all they want is attention… and to re-negotiate for more aid… but they kind of ran out that card… so all they can do is take it to another level..

This is as good a recommendation as you can get for a near impossible situation. Conflict with Iran is a no win for us considering they border two countries we currently occupy.

I have to agree with John. Has anyone ever stopped to consider that the reason Iran wants nukes and missiles is precisely because they think we have a long term interest in occupying Iraq or establishing a permanent military presence there? We have the largest, most powerful military in the world, wouldn’t you be scrambling like crazy to develop defenses against what you saw as a threat in your region of the world?

Gary, I don’t believe having a military presence in Iraq is any more of a threat to Iran than our current bases in that region and carrier fleets. The fact is, we did Iran a favor by removing Saddam — Iran’s arch nemesis — from power and installing a Shia (Iran is mostly Shia) government.

John & Gary…if the US disarmed to the level of a weak regional power, then by your logic (and Obama and most of the American Leftist), all conflict & aggression would cease in the region and probably throughout the world. This tired, silly notion from the Left has been around for decades..the Russians built nukes and armed themselves to the teeth because they were afraid of the US (never mind that the US disarmed almost completely after WWI & WWII)…and no matter how often or dramatically this specious view is proved wrong…the left persists in advocating it’s continued use??

Rather reminds one of the definition of insanity…continuing to support the same action that always produces the same failed outcome?? That said; you guys may get your wish, if Obama gets 8 years, the US may be down to a weak regional power…then we’ll see if peace breaks out all over.

This is what I said Mark.

“This is as good a recommendation as you can get for a near impossible situation. Conflict with Iran is a no win for us considering they border two countries we currently occupy.”

I don’t agree with Garry. The Iranian’s want the “capability” to make a weapon-period. Even the moderates in Iran like Mohammad Khatami(from what I have read)support this. Whether we were in Iraq or the Middle East or not, Iran would have still set out on this course of action.

nuke’em now N. korea and Iran, mushroom clouds on the horizon?

It really is a sad reality that many, many people in these countries that havn’t a choice may become, once again as others in world war, destroyed for sanitys sake. We probably should start manditory service soon, if not for numbers on the battlefield, for national preparedness.

Lets not let the weak left of this nation continue to remove the moral fiber that makes this nation strong. Making us a permanent slave to our finacial master China is really stupid. One day, if not already, demands or concessions on policy will be compromised to appease the masters will.

So the dog catcher gets told his budget’s getting cut.

A few days later at the town council meeting, the dog catcher says “The threat to this community from dogs is greater than ever! Just a few days ago, we got a report of a big german sheppard making noise… well, turns out he was fenced in, but man, did he ever bark a lot. If he ever digs out, all hell could break loose!”

Then the dog catcher asked for his budget to be restored, plus a little.

Mark with the first comment has hit the nail on the head with this old and escalating issue of Middle Eastern Nuclear capabilities. However, we seem to keep forgetting the already accomplished Nuclear neighbors like Pakistan and India which suffer terrorism on a daily basis. Iran seems to have it’s inner society under control minus the rhetoric from it’s current leader. They will accomplish their goal because of our past and current administrations all the way back to Gerald Ford and onward. Not that they were not good leaders but they did not focus intelligence with the vigor that is currently being executed. My point is that it is to late to do now what should have been accomplished 2 decades ago. Yes that’s right not even the Obama Meister can change this.

Let’s not forget, folks.

This is the administration that wants to cut “Star Wars” defense. They certainly choose a dandy time period.

I say we go to Iran and invade the whole country and then bomb the brakes off of N.Korea. Thats what I say, we need to show our superiority over these little rising country before they become anymore of a threat.

Why does everyone feel the need to politicize everything? Man, I feel like this country is coming undone at the seams. Everything always seems to be about liberals vs. conservatives. Our last administration, which I think we can all agree with, was very hawkish. Were they able to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions? NO! Did they stop N. Korea? NO! So, let’s not make this about Obama and his administration. The fact is, we are stretched way too thin in our military to really do much about it. Do we really want to fight the Iranians on their turf? I don’t think so. The fact is, we really don’t know how to fight terrorism. We think we can apply normal warfare doctrine against an enemy that frankly, has little to lose. First, we need to get away from calling our fight against terror a “war”. Wars are fought by nation-state uniformed armies. Fighting terror is like fighting the drug cartels, except instead of being financially driven, they are driven by ideology. You will never eradicate that completely. We need to realize that fighting terrorists is like fighting cockroaches. You know you’re never going to kill them off. Your goal is to just keep them out of your house. The best way to reduce their numbers is to help the people where they live have better, more productive lives. People become terrorists when their lives suck. I guarantee Osama studied the Nazis. They were able to rise to power because at that time, the Germans lives were awful. They were ripe for a scapegoat for all of their problems. We are now the great scapegoat for the poor Muslims. It’s all America’s fault, they are taught. Say it enough times and it becomes the truth, right? That’s what the Nazis did. So, we need to somehow prop up these countries. As to how to do that, I’m not sure, as I doubt many American businesses will want to set up shop in an area that is unstable. We need to help the Governments of the countries like Pakistan become stable. We’re not going to accomplish that with airstrikes. The “bad” guys are just too good at creating negative propoganda. I suggest an advertising campaign showing the Muslims around the world just how much good we have done for Muslims. After all, we stopped the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia. Why don’t we publicize that more in that part of the world? Why don’t we show how Muslim business owners in this country prosper? I say an all-out ad blitz would be a good idea. These people all watch TV too. Any other ideas?

Let’s quit making this all about liberals vs. conservatives. We’re all in this together.

BTW, SoldierDro, your comment shows why YOU are NOT running the country. However, I would be okay with Obama going on record stating that IF a WMD were used against us or our allies, and if we were to trace it’s origin to a particular country (shouldn’t really be too hard), then we would wipe that country off the face of the earth. I don’t have a problem with MAD strategy. It has worked for years. Terrorists do not have the means to develop their own WMD. They have to come from real states, and those countries generally have survival instincts. I would be okay with putting the fear of “Allah” in them.

We need to build up a strong Naval presence in the East China sea and give a statement“STOP THE NUKES NOW,LAST CHANCE”!! Leave Obama admin. out and, allow the secretary of defense and the military to handle this.I believe then you would be surprised how much support we would probably gain from Russia and China and of course, how happy Japan and S.Korea would be.

There are a couple of truths that need to be considered. First, the RAND corporation is full of liberals that have certain views that taint their reports. Second, our intelligence people have known about this for a while. (But, they are unable to do anything because of the political issues!) Third, the “world” is totally selfish and ONLY cares about very restrictive, narcissistic goals, which is why crazy human rights violations as we see in East Africa continue without any response from the nations of the world.

So, what does it all mean? No one is going to do anything “real” until it is in their “best interest” to do so.

Terrorists have two goals: To spread Muslim power throughout the world and to destroy their perceived “enemies”…Israel and the US. There is NO “rational” thought here! Who is going to challenge them? We need to step up support for Israel, NOT insult them as our ARAB (He is NOT “Black!) president continues to do! By allowing his “Muslim brothers” in Iran to become militarily powerful in the area of missiles and WMD’s while denying assistance to Israel, Obama is forcing their hand! Israel MUST respond militarily as they have in the past. Then Obama will cry “foul” and pull even more support! It’s a “no win” for Israel!

Anyone in intelligence saw this coming. What happened to the WMD’s in Iraq? Yes, they still exist…Who has them? Who “gave” Iran the missile technology? (Look to the people that gave Iraq WMD technology! This will tell you WHY certain “players” were NOT interested in helping with Iraq!…OR Iran!) How will Iran use WMD’s and missiles? These are the REAL questions to ask. Everyone is making comments without a clear picture of the situation or understanding of the motivations of the players. This is why everyone but the terorists will fail!

mike j has THEE best comment. its simple. makes sense and put everything thats going on into a small paragraph. who know what obama will do. overprepare then fly by the seat of your pants. thats kind of whats going on here with everyone talking all this BS about nukes and “HEY!, leave us alone! we have nukes too now b*tches!” every country wants to do what they want with out interference. and the US always interferes with everyones beef. thats why we are a main target. let em beef. we stay out of it. like canada…

Rocket Scientist, you need to get your facts straight. Obama is not Arab! His father was Kenyan-born, and his mother is white. How does that translate to Arab? His first name, Barack, is a derivation of Baruch, which is Hebrew for “blessed”. I’m a centrist, but the conservatives have no one to blame but themselves for losing the White House. They supported a man who I think is a good man (Bush), who was heavily influenced by a paranoid man (Cheney). Neither of them did anything to stop 9/11 from happening, even though the administration received warning signals. Then, they started a war with no plan to end it. Apparently they didn’t do their homework on the region. People living in the Middle East are not like Americans. At the end of the day, we consider ourselves Americans first, and our religion or ethnicity second. Not so for those folks. With Saddam out of the way, it left a void to be filled by each of the “tribes” living in Iraq. Each wants the whole pie. They are not good compromisers. If Israel makes a pre-emptive strike on Iran, I predict all out war in the Middle East. That would unite all of the Arabs and Iran. They have home field advantage. Do not underestimate that! Sure, we could damage them temporarily with strikes, but at some point we want to leave. They can wait us out.

jeremy–

glad someone appreciated that. heh…

swacksman– don’t go tryin to talk sense or anything. not much of an audience for that here. ;-)

This report is just noise added to the frfay over Iran nuke policy. It advocates a “multilateral” approach it doesn’t think will work because the main characters will oppose us at every turn. so much fro 230pgs of nothing.

it all in the bible. Read it for yourselves. Israel is already surrounded by the “two-hundred million man army” prophesized (Shia’s & radical wahibi’s) in the bible. The rest is falling into place BY THE HOUR!

Hope you got right w/ The Lord.

spcehauk may be correct. However, the key is managing the threat thru diplomacy instead of a cowboy approach. All those that want war tomorrow are not the ones at the front or willing to send their daughters and sons. They are living room commanders. SWA including IRAQ is not vital to the USA. We have ample weapons to remotely take care of the threat. Israel just nees to make peace in the region so us AMERICAN can do business and travel the world freely. Since I was a child I have to hide the fact of I am AMERICAN, had to go to two wars because we side with one nation, thou very much loved, it has no strategic value or resources and it hard headed approach get us into problems. Jesus gave us guidance and we are not going to change God’s plans.

SoldierDro

In my opinion we should go to Iran and invade the whole country and then bomb the brakes off of N.Korea. becouse we need to show our superiority over these little rising country before they become anymore of a threat.

Did any of you watch the NBC special on Iran yesterday? If we just give this country some time, they are going to turn around.

Who is the, “they” who are going to turn around?

I would like to recommend my new book, titled,
Secrets of Santaism. It is only available to those who can find it.
