When I was in Afghanistan there were a lot of different allies in the area. Only the U.S., Canada, and British were worth spit. Blow up a Belgian vehicle and they’d stop patrolling. The Germans generally wouldn’t get out of their armored vehicles and so were obnoxious and unliked. EOD was handled by one of our allies and would take three days to get to a UXO site so it was standard practice to pick up UXO, put it in your HMMWV and bring it back to a spot just outside the base (otherwise you’d have to secure the site for three days!). The Mongols mostly were there to sell U.S. supplies to the locals. It goes on…

So far as I can tell, there are a few allies worth training and equipping but so far as I can tell there aren’t many.

Please stop repeating the lie that the defense budget was increased. IT WAS DECREASED! Decreased quite significantly in fact & it is only because the Obama Administration added much of the WOT costs which were previously provided for in separate supplimental war appropriations that the “number” for the defense budget is not down. It is sad that you (like others) have follen for the scam.

Alex, I defendantly hear where you are coming from, and you could be right. However,what made me question that proposal, is that Mr. Gates guaranteed that their would never be a cut under his orders. I watched that video about a month ago. Granted, he could have changed his mind, but the Secretary of Defense is far less likely to lie then every politician in office. Thus, I believe him. How long he is in office is anyone’s guess.

Another point, Obama has a lot more things to worry about, then the defense. His poll numbers are slipping bad in the past two weeks, from very credible polls, that are known for being bi-partisan. Unemployment is about 10%, the last thing we need to happen, is the Defense Industry to lose thousands of jobs. So, for job security, I don’t see that happening. Plus, American’s would look at his a a pansy by cutting the Defense, which we all know he is one. I saw a poll on Gallup about the Military 1 week ago, and 63% agreed we should maintain, or increase spending. Interesting poll to say the least.

He put the DoD in charge of everything, in turn, stay out of their way. Jesus, he doesn’t know the difference between the F-22 or F-35. Honestly, it’s the Mr. Gates show now, and so far, and he has been under a Republican and Democrat. If Obama selected a new Secretary, then I would worry about your assumption, but being under two different parties, I trust Gates alot more.

The defense budget was increased by 4%, yes, the acquisition process was cut by 30 billion, but the entire budget was increased over Bush. If you have time, check out Wikipedia and search Defense Budget. That’s where I received my info. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t support Obama’s policies, but he so far, doesn’t seem like Carter or Clinton when it comes to Defense. Case in point, I read articles on the Internet from January and February, and they stated that the budget would be lower then Bush. Glad they were wrong.

This can be a great step for NATO (and Australia) enlarging to play a more important role in future conflicts with our partners. They might not have been willing to do it with Bush Jr. for obvious reason, but I still like Bush, god bless him. Just look at WWI and WWII, the US can’t fight it alone anymore, although some would argue this.

Right now, we are forging relationships with Japan and South Korea, which is a good thing, having friends in Asia would be a tremendous step, in case of a future conflict with Russia, or China. Not so much China, with the dependence on each other, makes it highly doubtful.

Although, I still have reservation on Russia, with the falling population, they could get desperate 10–20 years from now, hell just look at North Korea, paranoia is one of the main causes to start a war (case in point, Japan during WWII.) Same goes with the current, Iran, but they have alot of internal problems, that will not subside anytime soon.

Anyways, it’s highly doubtful they could even think about matching Israel. Hell, there may never be an Iran/Israel war, with all of the distraction with the people. The only possibility I see happen is the suppression on the nuclear facility, and various military hot-spots, like the first gulf war.

Export of the F-22 is a possibility, we will see in the next few months if it is feasible. I have reservations however, with the tech of the plane, although it will be raped from the original model in the current USAF.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, and it holds true here.
