The Mrap and other such vehicles are not tactical enough and cannot get into most areas due to thier size and enormous weight issues. Plus as they have found out, we warned them that as soon as they announced that we were going to up armour our vehicles and produce new ones to counter this that the IED’s were only going to get bigger and deadlier which they have. The news media is the largest contributor here, second only to the liberals. The more they played up IED’s on the news, the more the bad guys set them up because they knew this was a concern to the American public who would start screaming to get our boys outta there. and it worked, we are pulling out of Iraq because of this. So of course since it worked there they have shifted thier operations to Afghanistan looking for the same response from the American public via the liberal news channels. liberal Americans need to MACHO up and realize we warriors have accepted we may have to lay our lives on the line to protect those we left behind, they need to stay out of our fight unless they are standing next to us on the battle field. We will write home and tell them what they need to know and dont want thier news networks writing thier own war stories to produce better ratings. If you are really that down on America and the Military that defends it THEN GET THE HELL OUT, IF YOU WONT SUPPORT US THEN WHY SHOULD WE DEFEND YOU, We do this because we want to, not because we have to, this is an all volunteer force, many over in country are on multiple return deployments, they could have gotten out and stayed home but didnt. I appoligize to all the patriots that had to read this rant, but it you can tell who has never served and it ticks me when they talk down about our boys doing the deed they are too cowardly to do, but want to make additional demands of them.

And this permanent IED threat is the reason why Brigade Combat Team modernization should integrate M-ATV and MRAP into future BCT force structures.

Lead with MRAP/M-ATV to detonate pressure plate IEDs/mines and plow for landline wires. Use jammers throughout formations/convoys for remote controlled IEDs.

These vehicles could easily be turned into remotely operated vehicles, too.

Charles, until recently Pakistan didn’t care about fighting extremism. If we gave Pakistan aid to build schools to educated their children instead of jihadist madrassas, then they spent the money arming the Taliban and other rebel groups to help fight India in Kashmir, or build more nukes. Pakistan’s only concern was India, not extremism…until now of course, the Taliban and al Qaeda have clearly crossed the line.

What a tough nut to crack. A few things that have worked before: there are few well trained IED makers, we should be able to find some of them (mostly in Pakistan no doubt) and target them. These IED makers make the triggers and lower level people seem to merge them with the explosive and then the lowest level guys place them. Targeting the IED makers will attack a choke point.
Next — buy as many of the low level guys as we can afford. And try to make sure that when they go off the dole — the IED experts will be gone.
And give the Pakistani population an alternative to the radical madrassas! We could pay for schools that actually teach job skills and history and do not emphasis memorizing the Koran. Teaching them to weld or do carpentry might counterbalance the radicals. But that will be a long term effort.
