However there is a lot of cons to having canards on the F-15: 1) Canards increase drag, which reduce speed and range. If you noticed the latest Su-35's no longer have canards, for this reason. 2) It's more components that can fail and potentially create more maintenance and downtime. 3) When NASA added the canards, the provisions for the gun system had to be removed in order to make the system work. While most air-to-air engagements occur beyond visual range with missiles, training battles still see enough legitimate close-range encounters where a gun is the weapon of choice, even over a short-range infrared missile. When I say legitimate, I mean as in it was not a choreographed scenario where the two aircraft are forced to used guns. 4) With the latest AIM-9X paired with the high-off boresight Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System and the latest V3 AESA radar, no current or future adversary aircraft can outmaneuver beyond the F-15's weapons. The F-15 is maneuverable enough to get a firing solution and make kills. Even with the Su-35's super maneuverability, it's not enough to outmaneuver modern missiles such as the AIM-9X or the AIM-120.

Yes, it’s been done before by NASA in the 80’s on an F-15B along with 2D (and later 3D) thrust vectoring engines.
