Just another flyboy, I guess. He literally equates being ethical with following the law. All that is is being lawful. Ethics goes a step beyond. It goes to values and morals and has more gray that a law with its words on paper. Especially with his responsibilities. Gen Schwartz should learn the real meaning of ethics, not just staying within the law. I can only wonder how many conversations he has been in during his career that he was told to forget or deny ever took place.

While I agree with the statement on ethics, I am concerned that he has placed ethics within the confines of what is lawful. The ethical thing to do might be illegal and the legal thing just might be unethical. We make a mistake when the ethics advisors to Generals and Admirals are lawyers. Ethics must be seen as something larger and different than legal.

Good Morning Folks,

The big news here is General Schwartz’s ethics statement, a first, I would like to see Adm Mullens and the other service chiefs make the same statements and for Sec. Gates to hold them to it.

Duty, Honor and Country, and Do not lie, cheat, steal nor tolerate those that do, might become more then just a legacy saying from an idealized past.
