Call Me Throw Bot

Call Me Throw Bot

Through the years I’ve seen a good deal of ground bots being developed for troops in the zone. But I’ve never seen one as seemingly resilient and simply functional as the Recon Robotics Recon Scout XT.

Weighing in at 1.2lbs and able to withstand a drop from three stories up, the Recon Scout XT can shoot real time video day or night. Its signal goes through walls no problem and the controller is no bigger than a standard company command radio.

So far Army Special Forces and SEALs have some, as well as some civilian law enforcement agencies. Looks like a good piece of gear for Joes and grunts too.

This is cool, but wow, 9-13K seems like a ton of money for this.

For that price I would at least expect to be able to control more than one robot at a time in the same area. Hmm, this limitation makes it seem like it would be easy to jam too.. doesn’t it?

With the two antennas I venture to say the unit uses a cheap 2.4ghz wireless cmos camera along with inexpensive pic/avr microcontroller and embedded wireless solution to control the motors.

I guess the expense comes in engineering it to surive the 3 story drops.

As a software engineer and microcontroller/robotic hobbyist I’m thinking I could build something similar for less. and that includes the cost of small out-of-house part fabrication.

This piece of technology is awesome, wonder why I haven’t seen it in the armies old and new FCS program…

As Jeffrey said… 9-13k is alot for this small thing (obviously the company is after money).

But as for “I guess the expense comes in engineering it to survive the 3 story drops.”

My phone can survive this, be ran over by a truck, and is waterproof. Not to mention it has a camera on it aswell (along with many other features) Yet it cost $300. I’m sure I can put wheels on it and remote control it aswell for $50. The throw bot is about 9-13k overpriced. :)
