Gates Throws Down VH-71 Veto Threat

Defense Secretary Robert Gates upped the ante in the war of wills with Congress, threatening to tell President Obama he should veto the defense spending bill should it contain funding for the VH-71 presidential helicopter.

Gates made the veto threat in an Oct. 14 letter to the chairman and ranking member of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee. He added a caveat to the veto threat, saying any language in the bill that would “prejudge the plan to re-compete the Presidential helicopter…” would also attract a veto recommendation.

Gates also made what must be one of the boldest statements by any administration official to Congress in many years, a blanket claim that is sure to raise hackles among appropriators: “The defense spending bill should not provide funding for weapons that are not working or are no longer needed.”

The defense secretary also restated the administration’s position on the F136 engine for the Joint Strike Fighter, saying that if such funding would “seriously disrupt the JSF program” he would recommend a veto. And Gates reiterated that he really, really does not like the C-17 money included in the spending bill, but there aren’t any veto threats made.

(Tip of the hat to Roxana Tiron of The Hill who broke the story of the Gates letter.)

Tell ‘em, SECDEF. Let it be known the era of Cold War pork projects is over.

Is a resurgent Russia (and asymmetrical attacks against POTUS whil airborne) a reality? Yes.

Do we need VH-71? No. I’ve been to Bolling and Davidson Air Field. The new Presidential helo can be done cheaper and with existing frames. Just ask Lockheed.

Now this veto I agree with. RIP F-22 :(

If I hear “Cold War” project one more time used as a negative I am going to be really pissed off. We still need the types of equipment we were developing in the Cold War, new tanks, aircraft, etc. Why don’t people understand this?

yea so lets veto this project so we can start a new presidential helo project from scratch great idea to throw away billions when Lockmart said they could get the frames already finished ready for service for little to no additional funding, but no lets just end that program to start a new one…

gates is a fraud

Cold war proyects? oh yea I remember those; F-16, F-18, F-15, A-10, B-1,B-2, M-1,AH-64, ETC. WAIT! arent those the wepons that are fighting the 2 wars we are in?

Let me get this, the way to get the economy back toghether is to put all the defence workers on the street?

I’d agree with that except for the C-17 bit. I don’t know why Gates thinks he has enough airlift capability when so much of the cargo going into Afghanistan is carried by contractors. You almost never have enough cargo capability.

This shows the power of foreign bribes (aka campaign contributions) This a British-Italian program hidden by American lobbyists.

It was the Phase 2 VH-71’s that were the problems. They could buy more of the Phase 1’s without all the bells & wistles and they would be a good replacement for the VH-3’s..

If Gates is serious about cutting wasteful spending, he should cancel AHLTA, ANAM and MC-4 software projects at MHS. For that matter, he should also cancel, the so-called Centers of Excellence and review all the research spending of US Army Surgeon General (latest 105MM for the cooked HIV Vacine study).

He can save a ton by dumping numerous medical projects better handled by real scientists instead of the clowns he has been funding.

THERE ARE MANY THINGS HE COULD CANCEL,BUT IF HE DOES THEY WILL TAKE THAT $$$$$$ AND USE IT FOR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT FOR THE “MILITARY”,JUST LIKE THEY DID IN THE NEW MILITARY BUDGET.….

Hooray for Gates for firing Lockheed Martin and their ilk. Charging us double for the new helos. Outrageous. If the Air Force says they don’t want any more C-17’s, congress should listen. Congress needs to quit buying expensive military toys, just for the sake of keeping a few people in their states employed. The military budget could be cut at least 50% by getting rid of all of the defense contractor fraud, corruption and nepotism.

For all the people that agree with cutting defense spending because the cold war is over, I commend you. Once you get that done, please go to Iraq, Afganistan, Iran and stand there defenseless and we’ll all see how long you last. Maybe then those of you who didn’t have the guts to go there might see the error of your thinking.

i don’t even think tht Obama even deserves a helo. but tht is just my opinion

What was the latest projected unit “fly away price” of the Presidential Helo Project?
