Personally, I think the idea that a victorious Taliban in Afghanistan would NOT support al Qaeda to be rather far fetched. If we let them back in, why would they not want to support al Qaeda and anyone else who targeted the US? After all, this is the land of an eye for an eye and we are the country that invaded them. If we let them win, what are we going to do about it? Invade again and lose another ten year war?

In summary, I guess you could say that I disagree with Mr. Sageman.

Jack, I hate to say this. But if Obama wanted to, he could blame Bush for Afghanistan. (It’s the only thing Obama can blame Bush on and let it stick). If Bush didn’t decide to ignore Afghanistan for Iraq (or even go into Iraq without the proper amount of troops), Afghanistan would probably be a different place today, and if not we would probably of been out of Iraq a along time ago, and would be farther along in fighting the Taliban.

What this guy fails to mention,is that in fact nation building is counter terrorism. Not the other way around. When you have a situation such as it is in Afghanistan, it would be foolish to think that now the local Afghan populace and the Taliban would not allow AQ to rebuild on Afghanistan soil. And with the current distaste of American forces now, just wait until we pull out. It will only get worse, and lead to new and emboldened operatives for terror strikes. It will happen this way because of one of 2 things..to counter what is happening, you first need to inject a massive amount into infrastructure. Then you have to hunt the terrorists. And by doing so, you also must try to stamp out the root cause of terrorism…poverty, poor education,and those who feed and foster terror(clerics, and such)

Nice plan, but the reality is we have made international commitments to a fledgling Afghan government. If we were to go this route, we might as well cut all funding to the Afghan government, and forget about building an Afghan national army or police force, because there would be no point in doing otherwise.
I have no problem following this strategy in its pure form, but that’s not what the politicians (looking for an easy answer) are going to do. Politicians like Levin and Biden are going to latch on to this reasoning, while continuing to have us nation build; getting our young men and women killed trying to hold it all together with numbers not suited to the task.

Either nation build properly with the counterinsurgency appraoch, or pull all our conventional forces out. There should be no fudging these two choices.
