Shut Up, Gates Says Again

Shut Up, Gates Says Again

UPDATED: Gates Shop Leaks When It Suits Em, Says Loren Thompson

Defense Secretary Robert Gates really hates people talking out of school. Remember his non-disclosure agreements he required senior military and civilian defense leaders to sign? Well, on his way to Oshkosh to visit the company making the M-ATV today, the former spymaster threatened to fire anyone who shares information on the current debate about the Afghanistan strategy and last week’s shootings at Fort Hood, Texas.

“I am appalled by the amount of leaking that has been going on,” Gates told reporters on the plane to Oshkosh, Wisc., according to coverage from our colleague Donna Miles of the American Forces Press Service. If Gates finds out who did the leaking, “it would probably be a career ender,” he said.

Congressional reaction was fairly muted, which surprised me given the strong comments made when Gates required the non-disclosure agreements.

“People wouldn’t be leaking so much if Obama would get on the stick and make a decision,” one aide said in an email. When I went back and asked if this was a troubling pattern or business as usual, the aide. said, “It’s absolutely a pattern. The Obama-Gates political machine doesn’t want transparency–they want to massage every piece of information before it comes out.”

A second aide actually said the Obama Pentagon is doing a pretty good job of sharing information with the Hill. “Informing Congress isn’t leaking. The information flow from DoD to Congress is so much better now than under the Bush Administration that I can only assume he means telling the public or press?” said the aide in an email.

“I understand why Gates is concerned about leaks, but his own program evaluation shop has been leaking internal program assessments and budget plans to the trade press the entire time Gates has been there,” said Loren Thompson, defense consultant and defense analyst. “For example, it leaked information about the Joint Estimating Team findings on F-35 before the data had even been briefed to Gates, information that undoubtedly proved embarrassing to him given his recent strong endorsement of the program.”

In that vein, Gates did a little leaking of his own on the flight, announcing a new task force to improve the response to IEDs in Afghanistan. “It will bring together the range of capabilities we already have, and make them more collaborated and more integrated,” Gates’ spokesman Geoff Morrell said, according to Donna’s story. After all, one man’s leak is another man’s informing the people about important public business.

I wonder id Gates will find a way to muzzle the informal Air Force tanker leakers or the competitors who want to fight it out in the Media so the acquisition can go forward with the thrice revised RFP.

Gates may be strong but even he cant convince McCain to let the process go forward.

Well leaking information on the much DITHERED Afghanistan plan to reinforce(?) , withdraw (?), drawdown slowly(?) or ask the Taliban for permission is LONG overdue.
Gates and several of the Generals should resign over Barry’s continued Dithering/Donothing efforts.

The Obama-Gates political machine has even stopped the relase of the Selected Acquisition Reports (SARs) — the last to be released was for September 2008. And then there is the absence of forward projections in the P-40 and P-5 Exhibits in the Budget Statements.

So muh for transparency, let alone proper governance!

unfortunately Gates and others like him are too enamored of their jobs and the perks they get. Like Congress they can’t see the problems before them until it is too late.

Looks like the Mods on this site may also not be into transparency, so let’s try this another way.

Where are the Selected Acquisition Reports (SARs)? The last posted was back in September 2008.

While at it, where are the forward projections in the Budget Papers — e.g. in the P-40 and P-5 Exhibits, say, for the Joint Strike Fighter F-35 Program and other failing acquisition projects.

Oops! I spoke to soon — my bad.

Good point, Aleric though it is because they are so enamoured that they don’t even look to see if there are any problems till someone prods them to do so. Then it is likel the lumbering, burly elephant that, when prodded, mores one or two steps to the right, then plops down again.

On the one hand, they all keep talking about the need for reform in defense acquisition/procurment but they seem to just don’t want to know the problems.

Bizzare seems to be only word appropriate, unless you want to risk a law suit.

I wonder if Obama´s vision sees US Armed forces as a major threat to the USA, as leeked from one infamous Whitehouse internal memorandum, he must keep US armed forces and all the contractors in somewhere outside of the US soil, just like Roman legions were not permitted to enter Rome. Because those guys still could walk into the Oval office and say “Enough!”. That must be one of Gateses and Obamas major worries.

It’s interesting to see how this guys works. He seems to have this Dr. Jackal and Mr. Hide type of personality – totally different guy under the Bush Administration. Instead of worrying about leaked information he should be focused on having the President make a decision on troop levels in Afghanistan and backing his commanders in the field instead of throwing them under the bus.

This idea has been my hope since the military has its own felicity to our Constitution. But with leaders like Gates and those who invite muslims into our military; I’m concerned that the Captains of the ship lack the courage and leadership to do so.

John Quincy Adams on Islam:

…(Muhammad)…“and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of MANKIND.…a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. The war is yet flagrant…While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish otives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men.”

GATES , YOU ARE AN A—–E. BECAUSE SOME ONE HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION, THEY ARE NOT ENTITLED TO IT BY YOUR STANDARDS. STUFF A SOCK IN IT!

Stryker_Radar—good call—isn’t it interesting, distressing, pathetic, and disturbing that our commander-in-chief and the secdef would try so hard to throw senior military commanders under the bus when they disagree with those two and/or when they try so hard to get a handle on the hate mongrels (play on words) who hide behind religion (and since it isn’t Christianity, the perps need protection), civilians, women and children on the battlefield from Afghanistan to New York. I have mixed feelings about fighting on foreign soil except directly in our defense, but the good side of that is until Maj Hasan hit Ft Hood as a Jihadist, we kept the wolf at bay in Iraq and Afghanistan. It comes back home to roost that no matter the platitudes from our Prez, the Jihadist have a goal and they will not be deterred from that goal this side of Paradise. Let’s send them to final judgement and when they don’t get their time in Heaven with the purported virgins, let them weep for an eternity thereafter.

My poo is blue, how about you?

Yep, there are plenty of reasons Gates will end your career, like if you support the USAF getting the number of F-22s they require. He is as bad as Rumsfield and his obsession with the Future Combat Systems plan.
