No al Qaeda Defeat Until Osama Caught

The world cannot defeat al Qaeda until Osama bin Laden is captured or killed, Gen. Stanley McChrystal told the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday.

Bin Laden, the terrorist leader who has eluded capture since the U.S. and coalition forces invaded Afghanistan eight years ago, “is an iconic figure at this point whose survival emboldens al Qaeda,” and helps them attract new recruits around the world, McChrystal told Sen. John McCain, the committee’s top Republican.

U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry agreed with McChrystal. A few minutes later, Sen. George LeMieux of Florida pressed the issue, asking McChrystal what he would do if he knew where to find bin Laden. McChrystal explained that he commanded forces in Afghanistan so if bin Laden was inside those borders he would go after him. You could almost feel McChrystal’s eagerness. The general and the ambassador’s comments on bin Laden were the highlight of the full day of hearings between the House and Senate Armed Services Committees. They seemed to cut through all the discussion of troop levels, intent to win and the effects of withdrawing from Afghanistan after 18 months. Here was the nub. Catch or kill bin Laden and strike a mortal blow at al Qaeda.

Several senior defense officials have told me in the last few days that the underlying goal of the Afghan surge is what some call the anvil strategy. Pakistani forces struggling northwards, sweeping through South Waziristan and apparently readying for increased operations in the area where bin Laden is thought to be hiding. Then coalition forces in Afghanistan are the hammer, striking downward.

For a few moments during the otherwise repetitive hearing it seemed the truth shone out and all was clear.

Couple of questions.

How do you make a statement like that about a stateless, decentralized terrorist group? If AQ is working in Malaysia, and Indonesia and Iraq and Iran and Saudi Arabia and every other Mideastern hole — and perhaps even here in the United States, then how does he come to this conclusion that the death of one charismatic leader is going to be the end all?

That said, wasn’t McChrystal in the command structure when we began moving assets that should have gone to Afghanistan went to Iraq?

It’s like someone in Chicago on October 9th 1871 saying we should do something about Mrs. O Leary’s cow.

He said it would be a blow to AQ, he didn’t say killing bin laden is going to instantly defeat AQ. But its impossible to completely defeat AQ without killing their key leader.

Daniel,
Your Mrs O Leary comment has me laughing still. I’m guessing as Zach below has commented that his remarks were not intended to mean Osama’s death would be the death of AQ. Rather he seems to be suggesting that any other objectives met though damaging, would not finalize the collapse of AQ without the capture or killing of Osama. Clearly, the death of one man will not bring down an entity that has taken on the proverbial life of it’s own. I offer the possiblity that his death might even be a reason for more radicalization of believers to the AQ cause. I would further offer that his death of “natural causes” would be a better ending than the martyrdom of a trial or death at the hands of US military. I suspect that even if he succumbs to a natural illness i.e. kidney failure etc. that those closest to him will paint the death in a different light or to put it bluntly, “They’ll lie about how he died”..thus creating a martyr regardless of how he actually came to meet his end.

It’s a lose lose situation but his capture or death will bring a measure of satisfaction to the American public, the military, and the survivors of 9/11.

He is long dead, well hunt the world as excuse .I think he is dead or so well hidden that hell eventually die in a secluded area known by few!!

This assumes that he’s alive, of course, and it also does the overall effort a disservice.

1. If we caught OBL and paraded him around as a captive, the West will be painted as anti-Islam crusaders in an attempt to energize the Muslim world into action.
2. We can’t prove now that OBL is even alive and Al Qaeda can maintain the illusion of him surviving indefinitely.
3. What if AQ released proof (or at least alleged proof) that OBL was dead but that the organization was still going? Then what? Does the West stand down its campaign since a named leader was killed?

If anything, it’s a good thing that AQ hasn’t gotten as deep into psychological warfare as they could with a savvy marketing team.

Ain’t it great. All the Taliban has to do is go underground beef up heir forces and wait. The President has told them when we are leaving so whats another year to these people? While America is going broke financing the war these guys eat rocks and use the same tactics used In Viet Nam. We reap what we sow.

What a great and novel idea! What if our military hunts him while the CIA tries to infiltrate his organization. Now if we only had a government agency whose name is a three-letter acronym to monitor and analyze signals intelligence! That would be a hat trick!

If and when they find Osama Bin Ladin it should be kept quiet and he should should just disappear. No body, no burial, just gone in a puff of smoke!!!!!

America has been after this guy since1993. Sometimes in a less commited fashion than now, more or less. Pull the trigger on this guy and let’s get it over with. I agree with Jon. Let’s go after this guy and exercise what war is all about and terminate him with extreme prejudice.

We needed to use our (US) spy sattelite to know his (Osama’s) and the enemy’s whereabouts.

I think you should ask the Navy Seals that captured the other Rag Head if they would like to capture Bin Laden. Both of these warriors are facing possibly several years in prison because they accidentally busted the b——s lip. Give the guys a medal and our countrys blessings. Our “President”, Congress and the Senate need to understand war is hell and if you win you fight and kill people. I wish McCrystal all the luck in the world in Killing Bin Laden, not capturing him . I wish he had the power to do this, but he does not. We live in a bleeding heart society that embraces its enemies. Lets stick together and vote em out.

Killing Saddam, Qusay, and Uday did nothing to stop the insurgency so why would killing Usama or Zawahiri do anything to stop Al Q’aida

Because the insurgents in Iraq, for the most part, were not fighting for Saddam, or Qusay, or Uday. OBL represents an ideal for these people, and his survival represents his continued defiance of the west and acts as a motive for his followers to continue fighting.

It may be that his continued existence on this earth (if he is alive) does offer a measure of motivation to his followers, but as I suggested earlier..his death will also motivate the same group and likely others. The philosophy that cutting off the head lends the body useless no longer applies in todays world. Now cutting the head off just means a new head appears in it’s place and the body may slow momentarily but eventually it regains it’s motive and continues on.

Revenge, vengeance, justice, whichever adjective you select to use..it’s the real reason for the US pursuit of OBL. The politicians and military leaders can paint the picture that his death or capture will end the AQ network if they like, but that is simply not likely to be the case.

Do not misunderstand me Kinship, I feel no love loss..absolutely ZERO for the death of OBL. I hope he gets exactly what he deserves and am in fact confident he wil..I just doubt that will occur on this earth. My point is simply to say his death will Not equal the death of AQ nor will it be the “message” that we hope to send. It will likely be a rallying cry to those who already abhor the life they live and abhor even that much more the life of free men and women such as those found in America. Do not disillusion yourself with the idea that we will “teach them a lesson” and they will run with their tails tucked between their legs. History has shown repeatedly that such a notion is folly. So sure, hunt him down, kill him or bring him to trial..but do not allow yourself the misconception that it will be anything more than a small victory for justice that will ultimately lead to greater injustice done in the name of the martyr Osama Bin Laden.
Given the alternative is to let him go and not be punished..we have no choice in my opinion. Just be ready for more of the same hatred coming from another source that we will then have to address. You close one door on a terrorist and they blow open another one.

Cutting off the “head” sends a message that none can ignore. That we’ll be relentless in our pursuit of retribution and yes, justice. While our politicians waiver and just as soon forget, God forbid our military loose sight of the first goal of this war! Lead on McChrystal !

All you dogs that want to fight then fight on you money as we don’t have any money to live on here. Bring our troops home and let Russia and China worry about their side of the world. We have enough worrys on our side like you war dog the want to send everyone else to fight but won’t fight when it come to Bushes kids and yours.

stop hitting the submit button so much.

If OBL were killed, he would just become a marty and it would spark a massive wave of retaliatory violence from AQ. In the last 8 years of fighting, there must be plenty of experienced leaders within AQ that could easily fill the gap he leaves. The best would be just to let him fade into obscurity.

Although on a more personal level, i think we should do to them what they did to us. And by that i mean sit him down in front of a webcam and saw off his head with a rusty knife whilst the whole world watches. I’d even pay good money to see that stuff.

I think Osama Bin Asshole should die — However — I think it would Martyr him and may work to the opposite
On the other hand capturing him alive and parading him for what he really is (a narcissist Hitler-like idealist) may go a long way to stopping anyone from being a very (not charismatic) but simply evil person that had to resort to the easiest way of obtaining his goals (or what he thinks is needed or what a twisted person like him would think) by killing innocent people, Terrorism is in the heart of only the most cowardly persons — it is truly a weak stand-point and we should be exploiting that — AQ is a weak pathetic group that attracts mostly low IQs and desperate peoples. One last point (but certainly not the only one) is that we should be better role models and not consort with dictatorships for their oil (this is what Islamic people see all the time — and they are persecuted in these countries where we fly our flag so proudly for the F’n oil — it’s all about money and power and we don’t care about who gets hurt — again this is a big recruiting driver for the idiot terrorist who have no means or (out of the box thinking — other than terrorism) to have the world focus on the real problems — oil greed and selfish agendas

Chuck,
Your opinion, while yours; is without merit on many points. First, if you’ll take some time to research you will soon discover that the people who are attracted to AQ and groups like it are in fact highly intelligent. Your “mostly low IQs” and “desperate peoples” assertion would not fit a single member of the 9/11 terrorist group nor would it fit anyone we’ve captured or killed at this point. The “we fly our flag so proudly for the F’n oil” is a line so over used it’s almost believable but it is inaccurate to say the least. First, Afghanistan has NO oil so your theory is essientially wrong from that stand point alone. Last, do you drive, ride, or fly? If so, it is your demand as much as anyone’s for oil that drives our need for the resource. Until a better alternative to fossil fuel is developed we have no choice but to use oil. Or get jobs we can walk to and live near the places we will shop, so we can walk or ride a bycicle.

“Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah alone or pay us the Jizyah tribute tax in submission. Our Prophet has informed us that our Lord says: ‘Whoever amongst us is killed as a martyr shall go to Paradise to lead such a luxurious life as he has never seen, and whoever survives shall become your master.’”

Koran. Google it yourself. Think if we quit they will?

well, are we at last gonna strike in PAKISTAN??? Thats where he is..wat BS…

you really hit the nail on the head…when are US citizens gonna realize this? They are more dangerous than ww2 Nazis, and have a “kamikaze” mentality..the war of civilizations, religions has BEEN on..its just that our PC pols and Generals will not admit it..NUKE ‘EM!!!

Well how would this tribute tax cost us?

If it’s something easy like a dozen camels, then why don’t we just go for the easy option and give em some?

Only if we can put bombs in the camels and kill them all.

i think that has happened
