LOS is issue, but I have seen Tacticomp T1.5 transmit signal acros San Francisco Bay and video from Green Zone to Camp Slayer.

Re: TactiComp.… I think that part of the confusion comes from a basic misunderstanding of the problem that the MNIK is attempting to solve. The TatctiComp, just like the Land Warrior and the upcoming Ground Soldier Ensemble, provides a small unit line of sight network within the units geographical footprint. As long as the unit stays within radio range, it works. The problem is the beyond hand held radio range. Once the platoon moves 1-2K beyond the network it becomes an isolated island and can not communicate with the rest of the network. The MNIK bridges this gap allowing these disparate platoon clouds to operate up to 30Km away from each other LOS or unlimited BLOS using satellite technology. We are currently developing the MNIk to tie the LW and Common COntroller (CC)vto the rest of the network. We could in theory, do the same for TactiComp mesh networks and are working on doing it for GSE once fielded.

In my opinion you will need the middle manager officers. Just look at how the Army did away with the Signal Battalions at Division level. It has created a much larger headache for the S6 and the company level commander. Yes they are tied directly to the BDE’s and the commanders have more control. But the mission of Signal hasn’t decreased it has increased but we want to do more with less. Still there has to be a man in the loop to managed just as it is to operate the equipment. Before we talk about getting rid of personnel we better start looking at the long range picture of how it will impact the entire force structure.

Lol you asked about the middle manager officers and what they’re doing? I’ll tell you from personal experience, YES. They are sitting on the FOB making up more dress codes, motor pool rules etc. Makes it easy when you get out of the field after all that stress to come back and have that crap to deal with.

If the Army pushes decision making down the small unit level, what are all those middle manager officers going to do? Come up with more dress code rules on the FOB?
