Sniper Finder Rushed To Afghanistan

Sniper Finder Rushed To Afghanistan

If you want proof that Robert Gates and Ash Carter are serious about pushing the Pentagon to be the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan then look no further than the wonderfully named Gunslinger Package for Advanced Convoy Security (GunPACS).

The program got started in late summer last year and the first units should be deployed to Afghanistan in September, just in time for the peak of the surge. Four of the units are headed to Camp Pendleton next week where the Marines will develop concept of operations and begin training on the system. Total cost to this point — $4.9 million, according to Col. Patrick Kelleher with OSD’s Rapid Reaction Technology Office.

This system didn’t even need an Urgent Needs request from a combatant commander to get it started. Marines in Afghanistan sent emails and that got the ball rolling, said Kelleher, a Marine who served three tours in Iraq, including time in Fallujah. Kelleher said GunPACS “would have been a great capability to have had in Fallujah.

Mounted on the ready-to-rumble MTVR, the system locates snipers using the acoustic Boomerang system and feeds that data to a map and cues a CROWS II remote weapons system (pictured above). The CROWS camera gives the crew a rapid look at the possible target and the picture can be shared in near real time with a tactical operations center. That gives everyone a chance to avoid killing civilians, a key capability in a counter-insurgency fight.

The system was bound together by software developed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dhalgren and that means Predator feeds could be fed to GunPACS. “We have demonstrated that,” Kelleher said. GunPACS data could also be fused with Blue Force Tracking, but Kelleher said the Marines chose not to do that first so they could get the basic system to the field as quickly as possible. In fact, the GunPACS system has already undergone 1,500 miles of testing in Nevada and they checked to make sure its emissions don’t screw up other systems.

It doesn’t matter what ‘trick’ gear America sends to Afghanistan, the war there is already lost. It won’t make an iota of difference. The sooner that the US and other countries leave, the sooner things will stabilise. Look what happened in Iraq. After nearly a TRILLION dollars spent, 360,000 dead civilians and over 4000 dead soldiers and who knows how many more maimed, what you have achieved. Bin Laden won this war. He drew the US into a war that economically weakened it. It is no longer the economic and military might it was in 2000, and certainly it is no longer the worlds’ moral and human rights leader after Abu Ghraib and the GITMO concentration camp. Bin Laden will go down historically not as a terrorist (which that sack of shite is) but as the man who triggered the decline of an empire.

When I saw the images of 9/11 on TV as they happened, I thought that the perpetrators would rue the day they attacked the greatest and most powerfulest nation on the planet. They had the whole world’s sympathy and backing, but Bush blew it. He used lies and fear as an excuse to use military adventurism to attack and invade third world countries. He belittled anyone who asked for restraint and great wisdom and leadership. He told whole nations, that if they were not for the US they were for terroism. Remember that?

What the US is still trying to achieve in Afghanistan after loosing the wars still escapes me. I mean no one fears the US anymore, let alone respects it. You are fighting people who use mules to carry their supplies around, and AK-47s that can’t hit squat at 150 meters. RPG-7s as heavy artillery and home made bombs. They still manage to kick your arses. Its time to go home. They out think you, they out fight you. This is not Grenada or Panama this time around.

Anyway It’s a beautiful piece of kit, and you just have to love the good old M2, but so was the German Me-262 jet aircraft. The war is lost, and like the jet, this ultra high-tech taxpayer paid for (How much is it again) was bought in to fight a war that it never had a hope in hell of winning. Take your sons and daughters out of harms way and go home.

It’s spelled “Dahlgren”…

Using the god old Ma Duce. Schweet!

Correction : Good old Ma Duce.

Looks good but does it really work.???. are is it just some thing to make some politician are retired general rich???.

I hope it works to save the lives of our troops and bring them home safely

Can I have one?

a real sniper would take it out

OK Hows this? Oh my, what a great system! Why havn’t the Generals demanded $1.7 billion to more to buy another 134 systems. Don’t they realise that this is THE weapon to win the war? We shareholders care about out troops.

DEAR PETE:
WHY DON’T YOU GO BUGGER A SHEEP OR SOMETHING? YOU SOUND LIKE YOU ARE FROM THOSE ISLANDS OVER THERE THAT LOST THEIR EMPIRE MANY YEARS AGO. YOU WANT US TO CUT AND RUN AS YOU DID (AND ARE STILL RUNNING). WE, HOWEVER, STILL “RULE THE WAVES.”

JOHN

It looks like good ol’ M2 but the ammo can looks like 20mm.

First off, what’s an MTVR?

Second, sounds like a great idea. Hopefully it actually works and doesn’t screw with anything else.

Why caps? Caps really isn’t need in this instance. In the internet world CAPS is used the express someone yelling. If your yelling, then.… yea, tone it down. This is the internet. Everyone is right and everyone is wrong. And don’t bash the British, if not for the politics, they would be all guns blazing. (That doesn’t mean killing people, means dealing with the problem with everything they have)

Wow Pete, I bet you need a flat bed to carry around that soap box of yours but sticking to the real topic of discussion here…

I’ve used both systems mentioned here in a combat environment. I’ve used the original CROWS with a boomerang system, both when fairly new. They weren’t integrated at the time. They’re good technologies, but have their downsides. I don’t know about the CROWS II, but the one I used could also mount a Mk 19 (which we used) or a M-240B (with talk of adapting it for an M-249 as well). I’d like to see this new package that they have now. The integration between the boomerang and the CROWS II seems interesting.

Great as it is, I’d only like to see it introduced in a very small scale in Afghanistan.

Pete is a diarrhea of words and a constipation of intelligent thoughts.

Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement; it’s a USMC truck. Think of it as a large 2 1/2 ton truck used for logistics and troop transport.

Why use a line-of-sight weapon for the counter-sniper role? Any sniper proficient enough to pose a real threat to coalition forces is going to shoot-and-scoot or make good use of durable cover. A vastly better approach would to be use the Boomerang system to cue GPS-guided or laser-guided 120mm mortars; there are off-the-shelf version of both guided mortars (Dagger and M395) both of which have CEPs of approx. 1–10 meters AKA well within the lethal radius of a 120mm mortar round.

Hmmm…Does the Terminator: Rise of the Machines come to anyone’s mind? While great for the troops, does the trend to automated, computer controlled, battery operated equipment portend “ragtag” militia fighting with basic weapons and winning? Maybe these movie guys are not far off the mark.…

Sadly pete is right with his assessments. Examine the history books empire after empire over extending them selves and have failed. We are bankrupt, the slopes own us lock stockn barrel. its time to pull back bring industry back home and buy back our nation from the gooks. The smart thing to do is cut bait and come home!!

If it works, use it. Lets win and get our folks out of there. A trainload of those cave people aren’t worth one of our kids. Win and leave, even if we have to kill every god-damned one of them.

Pete, You sure have a defeatist point of view. You’re not from around here are ya buddy? While I don’t appreciate your feedback, I must admit that I proudly stood the watch and fought America’s agressors to defend your right to spew your jibberish. I wish you no harm and hope that you never have a need to be rescued by American forces. Should that be the case however, I strongly suggest that you take the time to thank them for saving your bacon from whatever group of jihad spouting hooligans interrupted your leave well enough alone, let’s all retreat, I told you so thought process before you tucked tail and called for our forces to save your butt from the bad guys. Have a fine Navy and Marine Corps day!

Pete, You may want to consider what wars on the horizon are going to look like, and consider issues beyond Afghanistan. It is called advanced thinking.

What the hell is wrong with you Pete? Bin Laden is still living (or dead) in a damn cave. How has he won anything? We screwed over our own economy without the costs of Iraq and Afghanistan. And enough whining about the United States not being a “moral and human rights leader”, our enemies don’t give a damn, some of our “allies” will whine no matter what, and our REAL allies will understand what is necessary. The United States will only decline if the people choose that path.

Still suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome I see, give it up, your great leader Obama has only screwed things up further.

No one fears the US anymore? Really now? Because the Germans who won’t leave their bases are really on a position to gauge the capability of the American soldier? Why hasn’t North Korea invaded the South yet, why hasn’t Iran gone ahead and nuked Israel? We have killed tens of thousand of militants. If losing dozens of men for every American killed is “kicking our arse” I would like to know what sort of drugs you are on. They are not out-thinking or out-fighting us. They are trying to out-last us.

The M2 Browning and newer variants of it will likely have provided us with a century of service by the time they are retired. How exactly does that compare to the Me-262? And a M2HB-QCB can shoot up a conventional opponent just as well as some terrorist sniper.

Nice system…my only concern is the so-called release process…up the chain to go weapons hot! Anytime the local commander on the ground abdicates his authority to engage (while using common since)…then it is a wasted opportunity to kill an Islamofacist. I am only surprised that the “chain of approval” does not include the JAG Office and the WH Politcal Advisior.

When you wonder why everything the military tries to buy winds up costing 3x as much and taking 4x as long…look at this post and you’ll see why. Because the DoD team doing the system design thinks exactly like marauder1024.

I’m not saying this as a slam, because I agree; _in_ _theory_ it would be better to network the sensor to a non-LOS response system. _in_ _practice_ it’s better to get 75% of the solution into the field ASAP, and then work out the next 25% with the benefit of operational experience.

And how many of the Empires that stayed home have survived? Yeah, we could have stayed home from WWII, but would we still have a home now if we had? The difference is the enemy is still willing to commit “mass casualties on a civilian population as in Russia entering Poland, Japan entering China, Germany entering Russia, Russia entering Germany, and the Allies bombing everyone to the tune of 65,000,000 million people lost in WWII.… And were regarded as heroes at home by their respective countries. Now we’re are fighting a war that has no borders, where often the enemy is unidentifiable, but still has no qualms about suicide attacks with mass civilian casualties, while our evolving doctrine and ROE require us to resort to technology to identify the individual IED and disarm it or locate the Longe range sniper and either kill him or make him take cover. We will win wars again in the old fashioned sense when we are willing to employ massive bombing and ground assault where civilian casualties are an acceptable collateral damage.

In the 8 years of warfare in Iraq / Afghanistan and surrounding countries, casualties don’t number in millions, but only several hundered thousand to quote your statistics… the majority Muslim fundementalist /terrorist against fellow Muslims (go figure…). View the video OBSSESION ISLAM (google it for a source) and gain a true understanding of Militant Islam and its goals. You’re right in one sense…we can’t win this conflict unless we are willing to use nuclear weapons or massive amounts of conventional weapons to obliterate masses of post stone-age tribal Muslims and save thousand of Western and non-militant muslim lives, but what kind of world would that be fo the survivors in that part of the world. So, the lessons from WWII and after are: keep steady pressure on the bad guys, with all regards to preventing civilian casualties, and develop technologies to make their tactics ever more difficult to pursue. Thousands will die over the years and we will never have what looks like “victory” in the old sense of the word, but neither will we see casualties in the Millions as in previous wars where we were “VICTORIOUS” by your definition. Its a matter of people.

I saw this (or a similar system) presented in a video. The one I say triangulates the shooter onto a sat map of the area using the weapons “gunshot report” signature. This little contraption really rocks, for sure! Whether the troops lay counter fire in the shooter’s direction is a separate decision. Just knowing the a$$hole’s location is worth its weight in gold!

Dit

I agree with many of you — nice system but not really a counter sniper system. The brass tends to call any one individual who fires a weapon from cover a sniper for some reason. A real sniper or anyone remotely trained as a sniper will only fire once if he feels he cannot fire multiple rounds without detection. A sniper is also goin to take out the target of greatest importance (heavy weapons guy/ senior officer/ coms/sensors/medic — yes I said medic, it has a great imoralizing affect on a unit and they are less likely to press a fight if they have no one to fix them up.). Now that I know these technologies exist thanks to the govt always bragging about them publicly, I would shoot once to take it out and let others be able to attack from different locations and not be threatened by this gear. IF I CAN FIGURE THIS OUT THEN SO CAN THE BAD GUYS…

Mortars were used extensively in WWII as a counter
sniping system. Both sides would rig up decoy
soldiers to draw sniper fire and then after back projecting
the likely origin point of the round launch a mortar mission.

The system I proposed could be cobbled together from
existing systems (the laser guided 120mm mortar was field tested in Iraq and A-Stan). All you really need to do is add
a laser ranger finder/GPS combo to the system described in the article.

Thank you Sir.

nice, but this next 6 months will show if we can win here or not.

Ah, ok, thanks.

so anybody who fires a gun in the air,(weddings etc.) will be shot with this thing?? so save our boys BRING THEM HOME

Where’d you do your service, BOOMER? Call of Duty, Counterstrike, or Halo?

Typical Brit cynicism, is any goal worth pursuing? Remember all the Brits lecturing us about Northern Ireland and Burma in Basrah in 03. They got their asses handed to them there and the USMC just rescued them in Helmund, where they were also being worked over. Keep up that government funded lifestyle, its doing wonders for your “British backbone”.

Without a doubt.…..Technology can turn the tide of any battle given sufficient quantity .……The question is not can we win ?.……Of course we can win, everyone on planet earth knows we can win !.……The REAL question is WHAT DO WE WIN ?.……I say Nothing.….…We are the most powerful country on the face of the planet , we have the ability to incinerate the earth and render it lifeless.……We certainely have the ability to vaporize a few bad actors and their entire continent if want to do so.….…It’s our commitment to civilization that keeps our enemys and their families alive.…..And they know that to be true!.….…Our solution is to stay focused and to track down the bad actors, termininate them (if they insist) and move on and get out.……Whenever the interests of the USA are challenged or compromised we must follow a similar plan otherwise our enemy will utilize the only weakness we have against us .……Civilization

.50 cal still comes in thesame size box. The larger box is used for linking belts together. That way you do not need to expose yourself every 100 round to reload. We used MK19 ammo cans with our M2s — Hold about 500 rounds.

It’s a 7 1/2 ton truck, also used for breeching, and fighting/weapons platform

As a USMC vet from Fallujah I appreciate people speaking up about issues but “pete” showed extreme ignorance by running his mouth that much and displaying how little he understands what is really happening, as William C. pointed out. Also, there are no civilians being killed, everyone is either taking action for or against. I have seen toddlers carry ammo and eight year olds shoot at troops, that is labeling yourself as military, even if the media tells you different.

Right on, John!

We are in Iraq to ensure access to their oil so we can maintain our standard of living just as the French and the British did for nearly a half-century before us.
We didn’t care how repressive their government s were just as long as the rulers ensured we got cheap gas.
Then we overthrow those governments that tried to assert control over their own resources.
We ignore the consequences(the rise of militant Islam). From their point of view, the militants would view themselves as right wing.
The kicker though is .….they are the bad guys in their own country. HahAhahahahah.
Oh! how we delude ourselves. We conveniently forget we are not the biggest country on earth, not the most populated, There are countries out there that can match us technologically (just ask Leslie Groves).
Forgive us O’ Founding Fathers we have lost our Constitution and can’t find it.

If someone is stupid enough to fire rounds into the air at a wedding while there are Allied forces in the area, then I guess that says something about their decision making skills. Oops.

I tried to read the garbage that Pete was spewing and make some sense of it. On the third read it hit me in the 3rd paragraph he states “no one fears the US let alone respects it”, BULLSHIT!!!! I don’t know where you are there Pete but I’m still working in the so called lost war here, four years now, and I’ve seen a dramatic change in the culture here. Don’t compare Iraq to Afghanistan, two different cultures and peoples, but you knew that.

As soon as we’re finished finding those like you and putting a stop to your campaign of untruths we’ll go home. Till then go hide.…stay hid..shut up or come fight. You are the one people don’t respect or fear, not America, I guess you learned to devert your hostilities at a young age, was it around the campfire when they taught you that woman were just for breeding, or young boys are for fun, that is the way of your peoples isn’t it ?? Because I know from your words your definitely not American, we don’t talk shite as you do we act, so stay home, in your cave, we’ll find you and your eventually and relieve you of your pain. Then you can go be with the rest of the wastes of skin, stealing our air. Have a happy minute dunbass.

hey pete… i heard we lost the war, too. When i was in Iraq. trouble is, we didn’t and we are not. personal observation, we’ve done a great job. Quit believing the crap you hear in the media. they were not telling the truth then and are not now.

Excuse me,is your name pete mohammed?

I think the Military channel showed it in action. It looked good. Look out snipers. Your going to get smoked.. AH

You are so full of it. We have eliminated a huge percentage of combatants in Iraq. Iraq now has it’s own government free of the tyrant Saddam Hussein. And as for military power, regardless what a shit-for-brains like you would say, we still have one of the most feared, respected, and technologically advanced armed forces in the world. As for “getting our arses kicked,” that just shows your idiocy even more. While 4,000 of our valiant service men and women have fallen in Iraq, there are over 19,000 confirmed terrorists that we killed by the year 2007. I’m not able to find the 2009 or 2010 statistic, but even then, 4,000 to 19,000 is an obvious ratio in our favor. As for this sniper-killer machine, regardless of your comments on the matter, this device will save many lives. All I can conclude from your comment is that you are extremely unpatriotic, disrespectful towards our military service members, and extremely stupid over all. You deserve to serve a tour of duty in Iraq so that you may fully understand what is happening over there.

People with the defeatist attitude like Pete should and will never achieve anything in their lives, other than the ignorant trash talk that falls out of their empty heads, for all to see. Sorry for us, but we will not let doomsday junkies determine our fate, are you hearing me PETE?!! America will be the only Nation on this planet that can be counted on for assisting other Nations good or bad, true fact, always has, always will. As far as the respect issue that knid of takes care of the fear issue in itself, .…evil will always respect and fear the good, this planet has become a green house for power hungry dictators and thieves, that dare to call themselves politicians and leaders, don’t mistake them for real Americans…ever, there are allot of real Americans fighting around the world right now for someone elses neighborhood, not there’s. True Fact !!!!

A bit dour Pete. Wins, per se, in the context of insurgency’s such as we see in the world today are not going to look like wins of 50 years ago for no other reason that these situations are often ‘extra-state’ ie not coming from an identifiable nation state. It may well be that a win will be seen as nothing more killing or so disrupting these insurgency’s that they cease to be recognizeable threats to the US; much like keeping bugs out of the house in the summer.

Beyond all that this appeared a neat system, it’s always good to see the ‘ole ma duce’ repurposed in such interesting ways

I’m glad people like “pete” are not in the military with me… It’s people like him that I do my job for. The ones we put our lives on the line for when we deploy to these other countries where if “pete” new anything, would know they need our help to be free like “pete” is. This is why we need to spend the millions on these weapon systems. So “pete” think about it when you are sleeping safely in your bed tonight…

I won’t work!! Any good sniper will shoot the system if it is in range of sniper fire and that is the end of that. Bogus technology that costs a fortune and once again, wastes taxpayer money. A good conter terrorist sniper——s with top equipment can acomlish the same thing with top results, much less costly, and repeated successes.

Pete, you lost it. in place of Bush it should be Obama’s name. If anyone is to blame — it’s the Democrats. Bush wanted to kick some butt, yet the Dem’s tied his hands. Clinten is also to blame — we had many attacks on ships in port and camps overseas, yet he did nothing.
Your comment on GITMO: it is a country club compared to their homeland.

Pete — your not of this country good US of A — are you!? You must love Obama. Maybe he is even a plant by your country.
Gary — good call

Part 1 — I see emotions have taken over the argument.

(1) From a historical perspective, Pete is right. Empires collapse when their militaries squander blood and treasure in pursuit of glory. Our only objective was to hunt down and kill one man — Osama Bin Laden. The fact that the greatest military power in history has not done that in 9 years is testament to our wrong-headed military policies. Instead, we are focused on the Taliban and and WMDs that didn’t exist. If we didn’t like the leadership in Iraq and Afghanistan, all it would take is six well trained men to force a reqime change. Not 160,000 and 5,000 dead.

Part 2 — The weapon.

(2) As to the article, it’s a nice weapon, but made more for traditional combat. Not insurgencies, where the sniper would take it out while it was being reloaded or serviced (mean time between failure?). As others have pointed out, we have these technologies. So why haven’t our smart American generals fielded this capability before?

(3) You can be for the warfighter but against the war. They are not the same. I know. I was in uniform when younger. But this is different. It’s not what the Founding Fathers envisioned.

Pete, I agree with your 1st, 2nd, and 4th paragraphs, however Afghanistan is neither a lost cause nor necessarily America’s Khyber Pass (the Asian version of Waterloo.)
I agree that ex-President Bush squandered decades of national capital and now we are halfway down a cliff, clinging to an outcropping. We have to keep the big picture in view.
However, I think Pres. Obama was correct to try and stabilize Afghanistan. He also sees the big picture, and is working constantly to tweak it to the West’s advantage. He is attempting to extricate us from a back-breaking economic commitment that we can no longer afford, but without handing the nation back to the Taliban. He is basically attempting a soft landing on a pitching deck.
There is no controlling Afghanistan from outside — the only way is to work through Afghans. Bullets will not win this war, no matter how accurate and clever the firing mechanism. But if this and other high-tech weapons can tilt this fight further in NATO’s favor over the next couple years — and lead to a stabilization that allows us to leave with honor — then I’m all for it.

piece of kit? arse? not an american phrases. go critisize the brits and fight your own battles in the UK. I’m sure we’ll still be around to help you our regardless, the next time your trains are bombed or you get in trouble with your neighbors. Remember Neville Chamberlain?

This war is not against the one individual, Bin Laden, which indicates a very narrow minded view and an ignorance of the “big picture.”

What empire? The British? The US has no empire and has never sought such. That is a 17th and 18th Century gig. The US owned the Phillipines for a short time after the Spanish American War and gaive them their liberty. The US could have kept Western Europe as the spoils of war as the Utopian Soviets did to Eastern Europe. When you find a real example of US Empirealism please do point it out.

By now I imagine you decern my distaste with this anti-US sentiment which has either been learned (marxist propaganda) or whether Pete is a marxist idealog himself, for this kind of pedantic display has been repeated over and over from the same script.

If Pete lives in the US he should consider relocating to a better place (Russia, France or China) so he may live in utopia.

Joe Nukem

Pete, You must stay up late to be first in line..Your comments echo Jone kerry, half lies and a fraction of truth..You would have been great next to him in congressional hearings lying through your teeth!!!!

Can we have them down here on the mexican border? PLEASE!!!!!!

No idiot — didn’t you read the “Near Real time” which means you have to have a human identify the target first. And besides, would that really be such a bad thing if it did?

yeah what ever, had plenty of time on my hands for 24 years till I retired to get real good at video games. But if you know a SNIPER (a SCOUT SNIPER and not a counter sniper) ask him if I’m right or not.

Ron Thomas — Thanks for continuing the deed I can no longer do for myself or my country, God Bless you and watch your 6.

CAREFUL THERE — the left might think your some kind of radical. need to be more specific to protect yourself such as we need them along the border to take out all the drive by druggie shootings.

You have got to love how people take the concept of free speech that.…who was it championed? Oh Yes, it was.…could it have been the…US and run that same country down with that same gift. What a high form of intelligence and tact! From the use of “arse”, his(?) talk of the german jet, his(?) use of the word “kit” I’d say he(?)‘s a British or German Al Quida sympathizer living in Great Britan. I wonder if he(?) realises how close he(?) came to having to write his comments in German Oh yeah he couldn’t Nazis do not have any concept of free speech. had who was it.…Oh yes The US not got involved and helped that once Great Imperialist to defend itself and turn the tide of that war. Just like Hitler Bin Laden seeks to control the thoughts and actions of his Al Quida Nazis. Just like that war’s the Axis sought to inflict injury on The US by striking on US soil; however the US learns from it’s mistakes and struck back on the home soil of the attackers instead of having to recapture country by country until the threat was deposed. Unlike that war and all since the death count of US & our Allies airman, sailors, soldier and marines and it’s because of superior technology like this sniper finder. There will be another one coming out too. It hits focused areas with ultra sonic waves even above what a dog can hear and set of IED & VBED(vehicle based explosive devices before they can be used against their intended targets. So if civilians are killed the blood is on Al-Quidas hands because no explosive …
no boom. So “Pete” before you start biting the hand that feeds you your right to free speech remember there are people like me and 235 years before me that fought and some died doing it to give you that right. So before you chose to illustrate your ignorance with your rants and ramblings(especially on Military.com) remember who you’re going to call when your freedom of speech is threatened.

Blah, blah, blah, blah-blah. It’s all George W. Bush’s fault. Blah, blah, blah, blah-blah. I’m sure glad that you weren’t around in 1943. You’d have been telling us that WW2 was lost and America should cut and run from the Nazis & Japanese Empire. Of course, we’d be speaking German by now and all the Jews in America would long since have all been incinerated.

You have GOT to quit listening to MSNBC & the rest of the Lamestream News Media.

Pete, your life must be miserable to say the least. I agree — “You’re not from around here are ya?” Go back to from whatever rock it is that you climbed out from under. You SUCK and I hope you live somewhere other than the United States of America. The Home of the Free and the Brave.
You are very lucky that this site doesnt give out more information on who you are or where you are located because I could see you as a statistic on the evening news.

As far as any new weapons systems go or existing ones upgraded, I am all for it. As an MP I have served my time on watch in the cities of Iraq and I welcome any and all weapons that can help save any soldiers life or lives. We have to try them out no matter what the case to see what works and what doesnt. I agree with the folks that a real sniper would identify the equipment and then take it out or attempt to. But if we didnt advertise on the internet, they wouldnt know what it was or what to look for.….DUH? Because of politics and the fear of being court martialed for those of you who dont know, weapons systems are not auto fire responsive. They lock in onto a target and wait for a human to give the go ahead command to fire by voice or push button. We now have to have eyes on our target and ensure that their will be no collateral damage to the civilian population unless the target is High Priority and that is deemed by the upper chain of command.

It should. Boomerang and the CROWS systems both work independently so having the Boomerang slew the gun on azimuth shouldn’t be a problem.

Interesting how Pete starts out with an attack on Bush, the american policies, and only slightly talks about the system. My take is that we have a system that may work to take out a sniper, we will have to wait and see how effective it is. It is far too early to presict its failure. Remember the M16, when it ht RVN it was a total disaster, now it the weapon of choice

good point john but i think you missed a few facts… such as we were buying more oil than ever from them pre invasion so why would we risk going into their country and killing them if we wanted to keep getting oil? hmm makes sense to me.. the resaon we are in iraq now is FREEDOM the thing i serve my country to protect.. there leader killed an beat thousands an thousands of innocent people and on top of it had weapons of mass destruction so imagine your self as some one who lives in iraq and has to put up with saddams crap wouldnt you want america or anyonw of that matter to come help you have a god givin right to freedom?

tax payer and john do you not like your freedom? an john yeah sure obamas getting us out of a economic crisis? are you high if us fellow americans on debt WHY WOULD YOU ADD MORE TAXES TO ARE PAY LOAD A NEW HEALTH SYSTEM THATS NOT GOING TO WORK is the bottom line bush was right an now america is becoming like russia

that would be a great idea that’s boost the economy a couple thousands points right there, none of that crap obama is saying the only reason the ecomomy jumped a bit recently is becasue of the 2010 cencus that employed people temperaly

David,
You need to be a little broader in your outlook. All presidents — both Republican and Democrats — have restricted the power of the people over the years. We, the People, need to constantly be on guard. George Bush’s Patriot Act did more to erode American citizen freedoms than any tax increase, direct or indirect (like through universal health care).

I’m an independent. Have been all my voting life. Vote for the person or issue. Served in the U.S. military. But, just so you know, Bush wasn’t for the common American. He looked and talked like one of us, but he was monied, East Coast Establishment through and through. He helped his Wall Street friends out more than us. How else do you think all those banks and investment companies pocketed all your money? He let them do it by changing the laws to favor them over you.

wow way to completely diss america in your non-factual statement. umm got a question WHAT country do you live in an two america isnt loosing the war yes 4000 of our troops to how many of hundred’s of thousand of theres? were there because they attacked us what dont you get if i walk up to you an just rock your face with a punch are you going to swing back? we’d look like pussy’s

Pete,

Your jeremiad fails to account for the fact that several jihadist websites have had lively debates as to why Al Qaeda lost in Iraq. For all the mistakes made by the Bush administration, we did in fact win in Iraq and Al Qaeda did in fact lose.

The Iraq of today is not the brutal dictatorship that sometimes fed people feet first into wood chippers. Mr. Obama inherited a rapidly improving situation in Iraq from Mr. Bush. That improvement has continued on Mr. Obama’s watch.

Also, you mistake our restraint in the use of firepower in Afghanistan for weakness. This restraint is in fact a demonstration of strength. If we faced an existential threat to our troops, doubtless our response would be proportionately less restrained.

One may hope the results of the current troop surge in Afghanistan are as successful as those in Iraq.

By the way, the Brits in Afghanistan are thoroughgoing professionals. That said, their “kit”, as you so colorfully put it, is inadequate in both quantity and quality. We have a nickname for them, “the Flintstones”, for them. The Flintstones were an American cartoon “modern Stone Age family.”

Perhaps you should apply your talents to remedying this.

Lest you misconstrue my comments, we also have a saying that, “The ABCs have got your back.” Aussies, Brits, Canadians.

It has been my proud privilege to serve alongside the Brits and the Canadians; the former in Beirut in 1982–1983, and the latter in recent years.

What was the duration and the character of your military service, if any?

Best regards,

typical retarded liberal anti-war sentiment… If we went in for oil, why arn’t we taking it? Last I checked, America has not gotten a drop of oil from Iraq. (and the only thing in Afghanistan is Opium and rocks).

Just as an FYI, I’ve been researching the CROWS II system and the Boomerang and have found that the turnaround time of displayed output is less than 2 seconds from the firing of the shot. Snipers have a slim chance when facing the integration of these two upgraded systems.

Well put Chris. I love it when people put their own personal views about politics on completely unrelated articles. This means one thing. TROLL!

NIce weapon system, but stop stalling, bring on the Crysis Suits!

Maybe it’s line of sight becasue no ones exposed shooting it?

If its got a thermal scope to see the body heat of the sniper and takes his headoff when he decides to take the next peak, or better yet, hits him through the wall, then an crazy priced laser guided mortar wouldn’t be needed.

Oh it will Neo, it will soon enough. Soon every time you pull the trigger of an M-4, it will take a DNA sample and attached it to the bullet Judge Dread Style except the bullet will also send a tranmission to the White House notifying them that you are being a bad peace ambassador. The second signal will tell JAG and CNN the location of your bullet impact so they can get started working on your arrest warrant.

Thanks for teaching the next jihadi nuttcase that reads this post good sniper tactics. :P

Better safe then sorry, lol.

We didn’t lose the constitution, we haven’t been able to read it since the liberals wiped their collective a$$es with it.

Yes, but the guys from Call of Duty 4 aren’t real Taxpayer.

That’s messed up Kelly, lol.

Wow, look what happens when a Troll scurries into the first commentor position, half the comments are about that comment not the article. :P Death to Trolls! Especially Liberal ones!

Perhaps your giving the dirt farmer in the pajamas and ski mask too much credability there Jerry.

Amen! Kill’em all and let God sort’em out. They think it is good to die for there religion. So let’s help them meet their maker. Pull our people out and turn those mountains into glass.

Need to put a bubble over the damn thing and just have the barrel and lenses out.

Or just the barrel and rig it up so the lens are able to see thru the bubble some how and use a bullet proof
material for the bubble. But then someone would put larger slug thru it anyway.

Meant put the barrel thru it. I suppose a 50 cal. slug would go thru the bubble anyways. Or something similar.
