China Hits Bottom, Plants Flag

The People’s Republic of China has joined an elect group of four countries that have taken men as deep as 3,500 meters below the surface of the ocean. And in keeping with Chinese claims to huge amounts of the ocean surface and its depths, the crew planted a flag on the bottom in the South China Sea, much as Russia recently did in Arctic waters.

The story was reported on Chinese TV news and by the official Xinhua news service, making it almost certain that the event had policy repercussions, in addition to the nicely nationalistic side of the submersible crew and the craft’s designer having done something physically and technically challenging.

The flag planting was done with a submersible, not a submarine. Subs are independent and can go pretty much wherever they like. Submersibles, which are usually designed to go deeper and possess grappling arms of some type, usually are deployed from a mother ship and possess limited range. The Chinese submersible, Jiaolong, executed 17 dives in the South China Sea from May 31 to July 18. The deepest dive took them to 3,759 meters.

The flag planting, “highlights (again!) that China has laid claim to the South China Sea,” said Dean Cheng, the top Chinese defense expert at the Heritage Foundation here in Washington. Islands and reefs in the South China Sea are claimed by China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. My personal favorite clump of islands is those known as the Spratlys, where people have died over tiny lumps of coral so small it’s impossible to build permanent structures on them. The Spratlys may lie atop oil and gas deposits and they describe rich fishing areas.

At the end of last month a Defense Ministry spokesman said “China has indisputable sovereignty” of the South China Sea, though he allowed that the PRC would allow ship and aircraft passage “from relevant countries” if they comply with China’s interpretation of international law.

Cheng pointed to the fact that the Jiaolong was manned, saying China’s ability to operate at such depths will have economic and military repercussions as they undertake operations such as deep sea oil drilling and labor to supplement Ch8inese research into oceanography, a key discipline for submarine operations.

This may help Vietnam in its push to enlist other Asean nations in its call for multilateral talks with the Chinese concerning joint development and sovereignty rights when it takes over leadership of Asean.

The Chinese have been trying to scare off those interested in developing the area on behalf of Vietnam, and seem to be dead set on usurping full claim over those resources.

A multilateral discussion with China is not likely given their liking of bilateral trade agreements and “G2” status.

This is again a failure to see that China wants and is trying everything in their power to dictate and control all of Asia and be just like the Japanese in WWII. The Philippines, Viet Nam, Thailand and Malaysia should be greatly concerned and they need to have an ally in their corner and that is US. China is going to continue to become more and more arrogant and start dictating who and what can be done in the Pacific and the US and these other nations need to head them off now. If China cannot get it by negotiation they will take it by force (Spratleys) and when the US lease was not renewed in the Philippines it was the beginning of China wanting everything and every country in Asia under their Iron Curtain. They have increased their defense spending almost 500% in the last 20 years and not paying attention is leading to a confrontation with them in the future that will be bloody for everyone. No wonder Viet Nam wants the US as an invited to the ASEAN nations meetings. Wonder if Viet Nam would like the US back at Cam Rahn Bay or the Philippines have the US back at Subic Bay? Watch out for China, they are pushing Asia towards major confrontations!!!!

You forgot Taiwan too.

The Sleeping Dragon is no longer asleep. The sad truth is that America wants the cheep labor but not their totalitarian control on everything and everyone. The Bible says that in the last days …“Revelation 16:12…And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.”…This is in reference to the fact that in the last days China will be part of a Coalition of Nations that will attack Israel, to China’s ill fate. God will intervene and destroy all the Nations who attack Israel. America was once Israel’s protector, now with our current Administration being a traitor not only to America but also to Israel, we will see America fall greatly. Don’t believe me? Look around at what is happening to America, the World for that matter. God’s day is coming soon. Maranatha…

ROFL-LoL!

Red China, the Communist country and its infrastructure controls nothing.

Wherever U.S. goes, wars start (:- How many wars has U.S. created for the past 20 years? How many has China engaged in? How many military bases does U.S. have in the world?

LoL! You made my day!

Praise the Lord and Pass the Chicken!

I myself believe in the bible.. but if God was going to destroy anyone who attacked Israel, Iran wouldn’t be supplying the money to the terrorist that have been attacking Israel for years now..

Except everything the US does thru its loans..

The moment the US strike at China (I don’t hope so!), the US will go bankrupt. China is still funding the USA like Thunder350 said.
But China is still exporting much (and needing it), but the balance is going to the inner market. In other words, in 5–10 years or so China will be less dependand on its export. Then China will be a military superpower and (the biggest?!) economic superpower (so called soft power).
I believe China knows that the soft power will have greater impact in the long run, and that’s what they are after.
China’s military build up is impressive, but so did the Sovjets and the USA in the past century. It come’s with becoming a superpower. But they are using their military power to get the essentials for economic growth (oil), but that is nothing new for the world.…

I love ignorant ppl people lilke you and thunder as of right now china only controls 2.5% of US debt. i doubt that is enogh to scare anyone. Over 50% of US debt is always bought up by PPL in the US. Now you have the Japenese who are our largest foriegn debt holders right above china. But there are a lot of countries that hold us debt so it is all spread out over the world and no one country has a grip on us.

Considering that China usually funds who ever the US if fighting at the time I would say that the number is about equal.

As of May 2010, China holds 21.9% of our national debt. So be informed correctly!

At least we own the Moon. Thank you Mr. Niel Armstrong.

China submersible, dives to about 4000 meters. While the mighty USA has no submersibles capable of viewing a BP Oil Spill, right on our own back yard.
Way to go OBNA.

This is a situation the united nations should be working against. to have a continental shelf limit is one thing but to claim lands under the open seas is not something that should be allowed by the membership of the UN. this could lead to restrictive policies of free trade on the high seas by all notions bordering the open seas of the world. I can see more problems, possibly even wars with the closure of commerce in the world trade agreements now in place

In time my bible believing friend!

I guess you consider “created” and “engaged in” the same (:-

The U.S has completed its duty by turning Iraq into a wasteland before it planned an attack on Israel.

Go back and re-read ALL the relevant passages…i.e. Revelation, John (Gospel of,) Daniel, Ezekiel, Minor Prophets etc. You are taking the very narrow view that only Revelations and smatterings of Ezekiel hold all of the keys without including all of God’s revelation available in the KJV (NKJV — holds some interesting inclusions of modern understanding viewed through our massive efforts and current understanding of up to date excavations and archeology).
We are not re-inventing the understanding of the Bible but rather expanding on what we know through a better understanding of the ever-expanding knowledge base available through what we are learning daily as we unearth the past and piece it together and what we already know through careful study of the Bible. Boiled down, what I am saying is that we don’t add to, take away from or remove from the New and Old Testaments (please don’t assume that I am including Apocryphal, Mormon or any other modern additions to the Scriptures as established in the Church and Counsels over the periods of 130 AD — 405 AD when the current standard of the New and Old Testaments as used by the modern Christian Church.
I recommend a good study of both Old and New Testament Scriptures in general before you specialize in end times studies. This will broaden your horizons in understanding God’s overall plan for mankind rather than just what will occur at the end. …after all…what’s the fun of just flipping to the back of a book and trying to deduce what the entire book was about by reading the last few chapters?
God bless you and be with you fully on your walk through life and in your efforts to fulfill His plan for you to enrich both you and those who need to be brought to the Kingdom.

Actually, you are incorrect. Your figure includes Trade Deficit. The actual National Debt held in both Treasuries, Bonds (and other direct cash instruments) is just under 8%.
We are actually more indebted to Saudi Arabia through the Treasuries for Oil Supplement Agreement of 1971 (not a widely known or advertised bit of government information). If the U.S. government did not supplement the underlying cost of oil to the public, we would be paying nearly $17.00 per gal. of refined reg. unleaded gasoline and a little less for #2 diesel. (If you are unconvinced look up what Europeans pay now that their governments can no longer afford such supplementary programs). The problem with this policy is that we have been unable to repay the 30 yr Treasuries that have come due since the late 1990’s and have instead simply offered isolated contracts for higher interest for the renewal conversion into 10–30 yr. bonds.…thus raising our National Debt by astronomical amounts. However when they figure out the National Debt, they do not include future debt nor the flexible and skyrocketing interest that will come due on it.
As we were told by the Pres.’ of the IMF and World Bank, if we do not alter our course of rising spending and out of control indebtedness, we will lose our highest credit rating within the decade and the U.S. dollar will no longer be the monetary standard for world trade.

Ya’ll just wait until “Saint Obama” proclaims “World Debt Forgivness Day”. U.S. of America don’t owe nobody nothing! Chi-Comm debt collectors???…LOL!…You want it? Come and get it! We’re waiting! TGIF, people, have a good weekend…

IF Bradford wasn’t so close to the truth … it WOULD be funny.
The only time we were publicly invaded was in 1812. 2012 is approaching.
12–21-12 is a joke for the sestruction of the world but may not be so funny for the US and other democracys.
The next World War may be a true world war.… Every nation out for its own inerests.
Fingers crossed, prayers uttered, weapons free.

I received a Chinese fortune cookie from Panda Express and the fortune said “In your next life you can live on the moon”. I thought about it and I believe it means that the Chinese will soon control the world and all freedom loving Americans will be living on the moon. ;)

The day is rapidly approaching that we will have to deal with China like it or not so the U.S. should make friends with every Asian country possible. It’s a none fact that china is building up their military to keep everyone out of the South China sea So why not cancel our debt and go for broke.

In Communist China, ocean bottom plants flag on YOU!

maybe they know where the ocean floor will rise

Impeach Obama !!

Please don’t turn the moon into another crime-scene!

Yes they do! That is the reason their Subs can prevent from hitting the undersea mountains,USN should learn where to go to prevent accidents.Check : http://boingboing.net/2005/01/27/submarine-hits-u…

If a Chinese ship attacks a US Naval ship in international waters, they will have assistance in planting their flag on the sea floor.

A smarter move for the US would be to broker the peaceful reintegation of Taiwan and the PRC while the bargaining chip of US influence is still available for trades. The clock is ticking and China is growing A2/AD capability faster than the US is growing capability of defeating same. The US could well use China’s help in permenently solving the N.Korea problem.

Elworth, could you post a link to what you are referring to ?
((re-read ALL the relevant passages.…We are not re-inventing the understanding of the Bible, .…careful study of the Bible. Boiled down, what I am saying is that we don’t add to, take away from or remove from the New and Old Testaments.))

What has Presssident Obama got to do with what China does? You’re taking this ‘blame game” much too far!
