The bin Laden information drought

The bin Laden information drought

It’s the worst-kept secret in Washington that Navy SEAL special operators were the ones who assaulted Osama bin Laden’s secret compound in Pakistan this week — and yet you haven’t heard any military officials say that on the record. What kind of helicopters did the troops use? You haven’t heard any confirmation on that, either — and the mysterious photos of the crashed helicopter make that even more confusing. (Why did that helo crash?) Was bin Laden armed? Did he use his wife as a “shield?” Yes, the White House first said. Now it says no to both. Officials first said bin Laden had been in his secret compound for five years. Then they said it was six.

In war, first reports are always subject to emendations and updates, but this week Washington has muddied what might have been a simple narrative by issuing all kinds of information officially and unofficially, deferring some questions, and refusing to answer others. One Pentagon source said this week that it was a “kill mission” — that the SEALs were sent to Pakistan with orders to eliminate bin Laden no matter what. But White House counterterrorism advisor John Brennan said the U.S. would have captured bin Laden alive, if there’d been the chance. So if, as the White House now says, bin Laden was unarmed when the SEALs burst into his room, and they had the presence of mind to shoot his wife to wound but not kill her, how did he “resist” in such a way as to justify being shot and killed? Did the SEALs resolve to take matters into their own hands?

No one is complaining that bin Laden is dead. But every time Washington has to change details about what happened, it damages its credibility on the whole story. And instead of continuing to feed the ravenous reporters clamoring for information, officials are starving them: The Pentagon today cancelled its regular briefing for the second day in a row, even as the White House refers some questions about the bin Laden story to the Defense Department.

The next major twist in this narrative will be how or whether the White House issues proof of bin Laden’s death. Officials reportedly have photos and video of his burial at sea, as well as the already-infamous photo of his corpse. Even here there are conflicted reports: CIA director Leon Panetta said Tuesday he thinks bin Laden’s picture will be made public, whereas the White House has been hesitant about committing to that.

What do you make of it all? Should the White House release bin Laden’s picture or images of his burial, or should we start trying to move on?

Update: The White House has announced once and for all that it will not release bin Laden’s photo. The image isn’t a “trophy,” President Obama told an interviewer on Wednesday; “That’s not who we are.” Is this the right decision?

Other than the fact that he is no longer an issue, what else do you really feel the need to know?

The Administration got itself into this mess by trying to put a nice face on an ordered hit. We wanted him dead (for good reason) and we killed him — case closed.

The Muslim world is going to hate you regardless, whether you gave him a proper Muslim burial or not.

All the public needs to know is that bin Laden was shot in the face by U.S. Special Operations Forces. Leave it to the White House to create chaos out a clear-cut and decisive victory.

“he… is… alive…”, muahahah!!!
prove it now

So what is this UAV that no one is talking about? Looks like a rotary /winged UAV.

Actually, most of what we know about the operation should never have been revealed in the first place. All information concerning ways, means, and abilities should be kept under wraps.
The bare minimum of information concerning the facts of the matter are sufficient for any purpose. Anything else compromises security and future operations.
Any attempt to temporize, explain, or justify is wasted energy. Any identification of units and/or equipment involved is inexcusable and is a sure indication of a lack of seriousness and an attempt by individuals and interest groups to advance their own personal interests.

The latest reports I’ve read on CNN, apparently from some government source say 2 Blackhawks were involved carrying 24 people. One was disabled. Presumably after the raid we evacuated all of our people, plus at least one corpse, plus some unknown quantity of computers, papers etc…No other prisoners mentioned.

However, with altitude and heat I would be surprised if a single Blackhawk could lift all of that weight out. There must have been at least 1 more helo in the operation.

Other questions about the 2 dozen other folks (many of them children if reports can be credited) found in the compound come to mind. A credit to the incredible skill and fire discipline of the assault team that more of these folks were not killed. One presumes they were all restrained with flex cuffs etc…I know I would not want to be operating with bunches of people running around loose.….

No at all sure it is realistic to believe that this raid could have been conducted without a whole lot of operational details leaking out. Americans are rightly proud of the craft of it’s special ops forces and want to know…

Salute to all of the dedicated professionals and the years they have given to perfecting their craft.

I think this article is pure B.S–nothing but a transparent and lame attempt to find fault with the POTUS. Sure a few details changed, as would be expected, but nothing significant. I’m curious as hell to know all the juicy details–team composition, helo type, weapon type etc. But I don’t have to. On the whole, I think it’s remarkable the narrative hasn’t change much at all. We got the SOB… Great job all the way up and down the chain of command on an unbelievably well-planned, executed and gutsy mission.

The pathetic handling of the“facts” by the WH shows their sophomoric abilities in military & inteligence matters. They wanted the headlines fast but lack the knowledge to use this success for a compete victory over Al-Q. The intel from the Osuma’s computers would be more useful if they had not broadcasted his death and that we have his computers.

That’s the “stealthy” tail rotor of the Helicopter that crashed.

Wow, it looked almost like the disk rotor being developed by Boeing.
Thanks!

GET A LIFE this article is worthless. bin-Ladin is roasting hot in Hell at this moment. Let’s not screw up the barbeque. Whoever, wrote this article should be hung.

Nonsense information is the lifeblood of a democracy.
But maybe that is not a priority to you.

Rumor is it that when ex-President Bush was briefed on the mission he had to be shown a world map pointing out Pakistan several times.

Good Evening Folks,

IronV, says it all. Bin Laden is dead, that’s what matters. The US did a great job on this mission, it was not a Desert One and President Jimmy Carter was in his favorite country NKorea. There is no need for forensic photographs, all they will do is play to the erotic interest of a few who have fantasies over such things.

I do hope, that after things cool down that the video of the services on the USS Carl Vinson will be released. This will show the devote Islamic world that the US is sensitive to their beliefs.

Pakistan. Expect another bloody change over of government and afterwards president Jimmy Carter declaring it was a fair election.

ALLONS,

Byron Skinner

I’m just about tired this administration going out of their way to be politically correct. Who cares if we offend some muslims, who are going to hate America no matter what we do. They don’t seem to have a problem sawing American’s heads off on Al jazeera. We need to stop worrying about what these people think, and start worrying about what Americans think, and the polls show overwhelmingly that the people want to see this photo. If there was some operational reason not to release the photo ( such as it revealing tactics or something), than I understand, but B.O says its so as not to offend the overly sensitive muslim community. We had to watch bodies fall 100 stories and hit concrete on 9/11, and I for one want the satisfaction of seeing the miserable S.O.B who is responsible with his skull busted open. It sends a message, you mess with us, we will find you, and we will kill you.

Al-Quida is going to get pissed off now even more, and plot another attack or revenge against us somehow..This will start another war that will jeapordize us soldiers again. I am glad to see we killed him, ofcourse. But I just hope this does not start another round of what we have been in for the past 10 years already. The way it looks, this war will never be over and we constantly will be over there fighting for our lives no matter what. That is always going to happen as long as the WH sends us into other governments and makes us try to change their ways of doing things. I hope Barack has a good plan for this. Either it will turn out for the good, or the bad. Only time will tell.

Hey Oblat it’s obviously Bush’s fault that you were born.

عملية قتل ابن لادن هي من اكبر عمليات جيش الامريكي بنجاح عاش الامريكا رئيسا و ارضا و شعبا

From what i’ve read on publicly available mil-blogs, 5 helo’s where involved two heavily mod’d h-60s carried the team in and a Psuedo-Paki Mi-6 was used as diversion, the remaining 2 h-60’s acted as backup.

We really don’t think :LONG TERM” Solutions when running our government.…DO THEY?

So is bin Laden now the 12th Imam, and in hiding?

IVE SEEN WORSE ON REGULAR TELEVISION,SO WHO CARES IF HIS HEAD IS BLOWN OFF.HOW ABOUT THE USMC COL. THEY DRUG THRU THE STREET HANGING BY A ROPE AROUND HIS NECK,OF COURSE HE WAS ALREADY DEAD THANK GOD,WHAT ABOUT THE VIET COL. WHO SHOT A POW IN THE HEAD ON LIVE T.V.
I SAY SHOW IT LET ALL OUR ENEMIES KNOW THAT WE WILL HUNT YOUR AS DOWN AND USE A HEAD SHOT.(FRANKLY I WOULD RATHER HANG THEM)IN PUBLIC

وكانت الأسرة المسلمة من السكان هم في نهايةالمطاف بمنأى عن وباء بن لادن

This article is a nit-picking waste of space. Find something legitimate to gripe about!

It does not look like an MH-60 in the photo, call me crazt but it looks like a RAH-66 Comanche with an all one piece rotor head with the blades cut off . Why would the cover the crash sight with barriers. then a few picks latter the barrier is removed and you see a pick that doesn’t look like any part of an mh-60 i’ve seen before. some on the net are calling it the MH-60 stealth. http://www.armytimes.com/news/2011/05/army-missio…

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jomatt/5690509785/si…

maybe it was a vertical lift stealth drone brought in to take out the body of bin ladin. Or like i said the first time maybe it was one of the proto types of the RH-66 comanche used for special opps.

It’s just a modified stealth version of the MH-60. Lot’s of angled fuselage with radar absorption and IR suppression tech. Special main and tail blades and certainly loads of special gear. They have been around for years just like the F117 was before we knew about it.

Why will al Queda be angry at the US for this “hit”? They buried bin Laden in 2001.
Worried about the pictures? They showed three other men shot and bloody supposedly
killed during this affair; one young man looked enough like bin Laden to be his son.
No picture, no hit.
I stopped believing in the tooth fairy LONG ago. Go Michael…I’ve been with you
since 9/11 when you called it.

I think you are right and I am glad the Bastard is truly dead, long live freedom. My thanks to all who were went to Pakistan to take the EVIL ONE out. NAVY SEAL TEAM 6 will always be in our thanks forever. Drake, you tell it like it is man, my hat is off to you. god bless you man.

How about Jewish zionists were the ones planned and PULLED those 3 New York Towers?

Have those stupid Americans ever learned anything?

unsubscribed. I think the conversation is over.

There might be more to the bin Laden story than most accounts reveal. Take a look at http://www.binladenslastdays.com

SEAL Team Six should have killed EVERYONE in the compound. Leaving some of OBL’s women and childern alive will come back to haunt us!
