Russia vows to rise again. Again.

Russia vows to rise again. Again.

Moscow’s bluster timer went off again this weekend, and its top leaders clanked out, like those little men on a cuckoo clock, to once more promise their resurgence and threaten the rest of the world.

There was now-prime minister but soon-to-resume-being-president Vladimir Putin, invoking the hoary old threat of the intrusive West and warning “foreign partners” not to “impose anything from the outside” as next year’s elections approach.

And there was now-president-but-soon-to-be-demoted Dimitri Medvedev, making veiled threats against NATO: If the alliance doesn’t “respond” to Russia’s never-ending “concerns” about the Euro-missile shield, Moscow could “review” its arrangements with the West, possibly including the one permitting logistics aircraft to transit its airspace on the way to Afghanistan. Medvedev also says that Russia could reposition weapons to counter the “threat” of the missile defense shield and it might even decide to withdraw from the New START treaty — though U.S. critics would argue the agreement never really made Russia do much of anything to begin with.

If you have any spaces left on your Russia Bingo card, this should make everyone a winner: Putin also vowed that, in his second stint as president, he’ll restore the Russian military to its former greatness: “In the next five to 10 years, we must take our armed forces to a qualitatively new level,” he said. “Of course, this will require big spending .… but we must do this if we want to defend the dignity of our country.”

Yes, it all sounds very familiar, but this time there’s a twist: NATO already is dealing with an irate “partner” in Pakistan, which has cut off overland delivery of supplies to Afghanistan after its troops were killed by NATO aircraft in a cross-border incident. Depending on how long the border shutdown keeps up, pressure could continue to grow on the northern supply routes into Afghanistan, including the corridors used by aircraft through Russian airspace. If the Russians closed it down, things might get a little tense.

These pots are simmering but they don’t seem on the verge of boiling over. According to Monday’s reports, ISAF has a long-term stockpile that means it doesn’t need the fuel and supplies in the idle trucks immediately. Still, the Russians can read headlines just like anyone else, and the closure of the Pakistan supply route into Afghanistan could afford rare leverage on one of their pet peeves. Putin, in election mode, may want to show that Russia can still tell the Americans where to get off.

Here we go again. The descendents of the people within Russia that got the whole USSR thing going are back.….

Makes sense. Nationalism plays well at the Russian polls, the west is weak right now and its a good time to rattle sabers to get more concessions. And stimulate arms sales with the rest of the world that are seeing the western worlds profile recede, to boot. Vlad aint stupid.

And this time, I mean it. Sounds like every other drunk come the morning.…

Vlad knows that with population decline, chronic alcoholism and some pretty nasty neighbors — Russia will come under NATO sooner or later. He just wants to make a good deal…

“Vlad aint stupid.“
actually he is!
instead of capitalizing their profits (from recent pipeline of gas to Germany), he is already diverting not-cashed-money-just-yet to the military .… no problem .… let them do it. When one looks for cheap glory gets into the dustbins of history. Afghanistan …anyone?! …I just hope the US does not do the same thing.

Russia is rising after near collapse in the 1990s it took years but Russia is getting new subs to supplement the Akal and Typhoon subs it had left after the fall of the Soviets.Getting more modern TU-160 bombers to supplement old but still useful TU-22Ms. Its upgrading the T-80 MBT and is having newer T-90s enter service now. Its MiG-29s MiG-31s and SU-27 being updated finally with a new steal fighter just a decade away. Russia more formidable than the pentagon makes may believe.

They (Russia) could become our last nemesis if there is no peace agreement with them.

Let’s put it this way. Russia has a legitimate security problem. Problem is, it isn’t the United States that is Russia’s main adversary any more, and beefing up its conventional and nuclear armaments only solves half of Russia’s dilemma. Fact is, the United States could be a valuable strategic partner for the Russian Federation — and vice versa — if these guys could get their heads on straight. The Afghan situation only exemplifies the issue. Exactly what part of Russia’s interest was served by siding with Pakistan ?

Commies stick together: Amurs and Yuans in the 100s & the Shi Lang can transit the Panama Canal (prc has a base at both ends, ports in Long Beach and the Bahamas and virtually controls ocean-bourne shipping). A space race, the cyber war on for years now and dire quest for hegemon. We (the US) can’t even get to the ISS on our own! The two-major theater war standard in US defense policy should consider all the above.

Let’s see, Clinton gave prc (Long Beach,) high tech missle equip and computer tech — they hacked what they couldn’t bribe; and, the transparency here is that calling their “bluff” one day is going to be a wake-up call from hell, what with our 1000– .. er, I mean 600– … uh, make that our less-than-300-ship Navy. Let’s see if we’re not eufrrprc’d in the end? frr in NATO — well jiminey-freakin-crickets. Certainly a wake up call DC! Austerity that.

Yep, the “geopolitik” looks to be getting really interesting in the next few years with a resurgent Russia, an impatient and increasingly confident China, the spectre of the “assymetrical threats”, religious fanatacism, possibly even resurrected fascism, and of course the challenges of unconventional warfare and the decline of the US as the sole “superpower”.… … Those three– or four– or five-sided zero sum games tend to get very chaotic a pico-second after the word “GO” and I suspect there are several years before the new and hopefully more stable world order appears.

Hang on to your hats and check the shoulder harness!

Two conspicuous enemies (commies & non-commies) so Rothschild’s long term plan to smash ALL could come to fruition — then, your so-called ” stable world order appears.” Hats and harnesses hell, kya goodbye.

What most Americans continue to fail to realize is that we have consistently been in the wrong in most of our recent military incursions. You need to place yourself in other countries’ shoes, we keep adding fodder to the anti-American fire. We are always quick to chastise other countries for not supporting our policies, but how can we blame them with wars like Iraq and Afghanistan? We are our biggest enemies. Right now militarily we could still smash any takers in a conventional war, including the reds, but if we changed our rhetorric and policies to accomodate them, we would gain a massive partner that could help us deter misguided countries from f-ing with us. If Russia and America were allies, countries like Iran would’nt have legs to stand on. You can blame the Russians for backing them, but given our recent foreign policy bullying, a sensible person will see that we are just as much to blame. Just read the above article, so much propaganda that only shows we still haven’t learned a single foreign policy lesson in 60 years.

If we withdrew from Afghanistan and let the Taliban retake control along with other radical Islamist groups. How would Russia like that on its Southern borders with no NATO there to fight them? ;-) How would they like a resurgance of militant Islam in their Southern provinces?

Hey.… the US just needs to do one simple thing.… beef up Japan, Korea and India (giving them access to F-22 batch 1) and watch Asia reorganizing themselves…staying aside without much interference…without getting to spend much … holding to spend on crucial things.… the new order will be economical as well.

If we give Japan, Korea and India the F-22 we might as well deliver one to China and Russia. Read up on how bad their cyber security is. I can’t believe we’re offering them the F-35!?!

No, all we’ve done is advance our interests above other nations, just like everyone else does. The only reason we’re “bullies” is because we are a world super-power. Iran does whatever it wants and somehow they are the victim (Saudi Arabia and the UAE would disagree). Once upon a time, we did what what we needed to, and the world could think whatever they wanted about it for all we cared. We won 3 world wars including the Cold War.…..

I really think the subjective derision in any of Mr Ewing’s articles on which Russia is the subject is un necessary and weakens the veracity of the article, and what may be a legitimate story.

Yes there is electioneering going on but the missile shield is a deal breaker for the Russians. The claimed threat (Iran and North Korea) doesn’t exist and is still some way off. Notice how in only a short period (>12 months) reports were released about Iran’s nuclear potential which differ considerably yet conveniently the most recent report is alarming, and the claims within of freelance nuclear experts aiding places like Iran was even more recently shown to be false.

Even if it was leaked that the shield was being deployed to offer some protection against China, a legitimate threat, I would tend to buy that more, but the Russians probably won’t.

You can’t blame Russia for being concerned given NATO has not kept to any agreements on encroachment made before or after the dissolution of the USSR. This hardly builds trust. As others have said, I too was optimistic about a partnership, and if people had read wikileaks it was revealed the US did offer a partnership with Russia but it was to team up against China. Russia said no. They aren’t pro-China but they don’t want to go taking sides against a close neighbor. Not yet anyway.

They are actually the least aggressive of the three (US, China, Russia) but they are also, not without reason, a rather paranoid bunch who have been involved in war in some state or another, usually some other faction wanting to take some portion of their vast territory, for the last 600 of their 900 year history. They also have an aversion to interfering in other nations affairs which is very different to the US approach. Take that into account before we judge them or we negotiate.

Your right.…..kind of. Yes what we have done is advance our interests above other nations just like everyone else, and yes we’re “bullies” because we are a world super power. I guess what I’m trying to get across is this isn’t the 50’s. Right now we still can’t be beat but in the near future ( at least 20 years), there is a possibililty of the tables turning. In the end what good could conflict among fellow nations cause? Non violent rivalries can be great for commerce and chest pounding, but a new world order is the most feasible solution for the world’s problems in this new age of technology and communication, albeit armageddon here we come.

If you ask me instead of causing problems with other countries we should build relations with them, specifically we should form much better relations with Russia and china.

GOOD EVNING ‚WAKE UP CALL WHAT TIME MY FELLOW AMERICAN WILL WAKE UP !!!!!!!

YA… that’s the thing … you give them the model where the pilots cannot breath! .… :)

Come on! Bring it on Ivan! Throw your best shot you bluffing sons of biatches!

U.S must realize & appreciate that how valuable an ally Pakistan has been over last 10 years.…..it is only when Pentagon deals with a resurgent Putin they would realize the HUGE blunder they have committed by attacking Pakistan

“Come on! Bring it on Ivan! Throw your best shot you bluffing sons of ******es!”

And that about sums up the mentality of the majority of posters and the American population in general.
Oh well, it was worth a try.

Who do you think will win this time around? The commies who pay their workers the same wether they design a good weapon or a poor one, or the “capitalists” who pay more for a defense contractor to drag out development and jack up the cost of the weapons? Being one of those old fashioned capitalists myself, I think the commies will win. I mean, what kind of idiot pays more to get screwed by a defense contractor? Oh yeah, we are that idiot.

The original USSR created by Lenin was the best form of government our world ever saw. The only problem is that it was never implemented. Stalin took over and ruined everything. Stalin was a capitalist. Hitler was a capitalist. They enslaved people and killed many people. They capitalized on those innocent people. Lenin and Trotsky never planned anything like that. Just like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson would have tossed their turkey if they could see what has become of our dishonest country.

Hitler and Stalin were socialists, dim wit. They were big on revising history too, just like you. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

So what qp, … state of dismareal or Freedom? who’s gonna make that call — ’cause the People are a’gin the regime? SPECOPS gonna drop in on “S”” boy? que the FED … houston .… we gotta NATO . .. c’mon??!

This response does not compute. Given the assumption that something would need to be done to contain Russia, what role would Pakistan play in that scenario ? A Pakistan that becomes part of the problem and stays part of the problem is no asset to the United States. A Pakistan that continues to pose difficulties for US Strategy, and then expects to be paid off and pandered to for minimal assistance is not the kind of ally the US should recruit or rely upon. What would Pakistan do if the US just decided not to play the Great Game and let Russia win the next round ? Two birds with one stone. As with US withdrawal from Iraq, US disengagement from Afghanistan ends up with a set of nuclear armed regional powers at daggers drawn and pointed towards each other. Not the United States. The more you bluff, the more likely it is that the Americans will call the hand.

I don’t think Iran is a very good example to use in your argument. After all, that’s another conflict we started for our own interests.
