BAE to Close Vehicle Plant, Lay Off Workers

The U.S. subsidiary of BAE Systems Plc plans to close a military vehicle plant in Texas next year and lay off about 325 employees, the company announced.

The facility, located about 50 miles outside Houston in Sealy, since 1990 has produced tactical wheeled vehicles for the U.S. military, including blast-resistant trucks known as Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, or MRAPs, for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Humvee replacement Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV.

The London-based company said industry contraction drove the decision to shutter the site by June 2014.

“We explored every possible option to maintain the viability of the facility, but the decline in U.S. defense spending has made it necessary for us to continue rationalizing our business base,” Erwin Bieber, president of the company’s land and armaments unit, said in a statement yesterday.

The layoffs will take effect between November and June.

“This was a difficult decision, but it in no way reflects upon the hard work and commitment of the employees,” Bieber added. “We will do all we can to assist them during this difficult transition.”

The Defense Department faces $500 billion in automatic cuts over the next decade. That’s in addition to almost $500 billion in defense reductions already included in 2011 deficit-reduction legislation. The first installment of the automatic cuts totaled $37 billion and began March 1 after lawmakers were unable to reach an alternative agreement on taxes and spending. The next round totals $52 billion and is set to take effect Jan. 1.

BAE is a subcontractor to Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed Martin Corp. on the JLTV program, an effort to build a new light-duty truck to replace a portion of the Army’s and Marine Corps’ Humvee fleets. Lockheed in a separate statement said it will move production of the vehicles from Sealy to its own facility in Camden, Ark.

In addition to armored cabs for and prototypes of the JLTV, BAE’s Sealy plant made trucks for U.S. and foreign missile platforms, turrets and systems for various vehicles, construction cabs and spare parts for medium-duty cargo trucks and MRAPs, the company said. It also produced enclosures for commercial oil and gas platforms, it said.

Work related to continuing business will be transferred to other unspecified sites, the company said.

Quick, preserve jobs by buying thousands of MRAPs and selling them to law enforcement!

Kicking down a door near you…

Blight…this is just the begining.….1st: force reductions with the Army takin’ the biggest hit…(of course), ground all hog’s, bones, C-5A’s, &B’s etc.….2nd layoff’s in the MIC due to reduced demand in weapons systems, contractors maint. aircraft, etc.… 3rd BRAC.… what comes after that… you tell me.….…

Maybe they can kill JLTV and just revamp or make a new version of the HUMVEEE!

The last markets for weapons will be the Middle East.

I guess we can sell our prized arsenal to the rich oil sheikhs. /shudder

The first 688i to be sold to the Saudis will be called the Allahu Ackbar. It won’t be funny.

Sounds good? Don’t get me wrong my across the pond friends, but DEFENSE and military jobs should only be there when FOREIGN POLICY requires so. If not, fire everybody you can asap. It’s not a job that should be there ‘regardless’ of necessity. I don’t hate on soldiers or manufacturers of military goods, but their product/service should only be available when needed. When threats are down, they should go and find other jobs (private or public sector) and IMO be helped/trained by the government to be able to do so. Building MRAPS when the government isn’t occupying any more nations is silly, and giving them to American law enforcement is also silly (however, Americans seem to be armed to the teeth, so bullet prove shouldn’t be bad:p, but an MRAP is overkill)

We need to cut back on all of this stuff and also close a lot of plants. The money can be used elsewhere. Can you feel how embarrassed I am when I pull out my Obama phone and only have a Droid Razor 2? By getting rid of all those useless Marines, Soldiers and airplanes and stuff, I can get my Obama phone upgraded to a iPhone 5S or a new Galaxy Note 7. Ciao Bitches I’m off to the liquor store to buy lottery tickets, a few 40s and smokes with my EBT card.

Thats why the Nazis moved right through Europe in a number of weeks, and it was up to the Americans, Brits and Russians to stop them. Nothing has changed much except the Europeans (apart from the British) depend on the US for military protection and consistently underspend and provide for their military. I don’t think that you (being European) have much ground to stand on.

Anyone with a brain knows that you don’t manage your national defense by waiting until war is imminent before you design and construct military hardware and train troops. You plan your military defense requirements based upon potential threats and budget and build what you need, then maintain and upgrade when appropriate. The same as you do for bridges, roads, basis infrastructure to support your economic and defense requirements.

We don’t live in a friendly world, you can’t wait until your attacked and expect to build the hardware you need to survive a war. Europe has benefited from a strong US military as s deterrent for their defense, but consistently under funds and lacks critical military hardware such as refueling aircraft which it recently had to depend upon the US to provide.
